A Place For Kids

Most Halloween
customs have close
connections with an old
and almost forgotten
belief. Ghosts, witches,
goblins, and other un-
canny spirits of darkness
were believed to leave
their .invisible world and
appear on earth the last
night in October. People
used to dress up as ghosts
and other creatures on
Halloween to pretend that
they were those
creatures. Now we wear
costumes on Halloween
mainly because it's fun to
dress up.
We celebrate
alloween the night
efore All Saint's Day.
Over the years the ideerdf
a `holy evening' slowly
acquired the name of
Halloween.
Halloween, at one point
in time, was a celebration
off the summer's harvest.
To this day apples and
peanuts are a major
source of booty from
shouting `Trick or Treat'.
Carving pumpkins on
Halloween used to be
done to scare evil spirits
away from the house. A
very grotesque face on a.
pumpkin shining in a
window would ensure
that a house was well -
protected from harm.
Dear Captain Comet:

Marie Olson. I will be
