Colborne Township's
14th annual Christmas
Cou-ltry Fair has come
and gone.
The two day event, held
last Wednesday and
Saturday at Saltford
Valley Hall, was attended
by large crowds as in past
years, including two
busloads of peorle from
Toronto. on Saturday.
About 75 craftsmen,
over half of them from
Colborne Township or
nearby, exhibited their
work. Sales were good.
The corn husk dolls and
pine cone wreaths
seemed to go over par-
ticularly well.
Some new features this
year included metal
sculpture, iron im-
plements and decorated
cakes and chocolate.
Regular features in-
cluded pottery, paintings,
candles, dried flowers,
weaving and Christmas
decorations.
About 25 bakers, nearly
all from the township,
sold homemade baked
and canned goods.
Outside the hall, the Reg
Riehl family sold produce
including Hallowe'en
pumpkins.
The Christmas Country
Fair has really
blossomed since its in-
ception, thanks to the
Stitcheroos
discuss
needlepoint
work and dedication of
Mrs. Wilmer )-lardy and
her committee.
It all started when a
group of five Colborne
Township women who did
crafts decided that a
show and sale of area
crafts would be a good
idea. They held their first
show, featuring about six
craftsmen and baking
done by the Women's
Institute, at Carlow
Community Hall. Each
year, the show gained in
popularity and about six
years ago, because of the
large crowds, it was
moved to Saltford Valley
Hall.
Mrs. Hardy, one of the
original group of five
women who started the
fair, took the lead as the
main organizer. Her craft
is weaving.
For several months,
Mrs. Hardy keeps her eye
out for special craftsmen.
After judging them and
their work, she invites
them to•participate in the
fair. She says she likes to
feature unique crafts to
balance the •usual
crocheting and knitting at
the fair, otherwise it
would he more like a
bazaar.
Colborne Township
craftsmen pay $5 for an
eight foot table at the hall
on which to display their
crafts and others pay $10
per table. Each craft-
sman must also donate an
item for a door prize at
the fair.
Mrs, Hardy starts
advertising the fair about.
June. She does ' the
majority of . work in
preparation for the fair
but says her committee is
a good one.
The 14th annual
Christmas Country Fair
leaves those who at-
tended, anxiously an-
ticipating the 15th an -
nu al.
