Anti -venom centre
At the next meeting of the board of Alexandra
Marine and General Hospital, there may be
some word on whether or not AM&G will be
designated as a centre for dispensing anti -venom
medicines.
Bob Dempsey, one of two provincial
representatives on the board, asked ad-
ministrator Elmer Taylor to inquire into this
possibility.
It is felt that since Goderich is in the heart of a
tourist area, the anti -venom, designation would
be sensible.

Mrs. R.C. McCallum, presidentof the women's
auxiliary at AM&G and a member of the board,
Agisaid the group was encouraged this fall with the
acquisition of five new members.
She said the auxiliary is now planning a bake
sale and some specials in the gift shop for
'December 7. She invited all board members to
spread the ,w/ord.
The auxiliary has just purchased a new oven
for the hospital's kitchen and Elmer Taylor,
administrator, commented on how very pleased
the staff is for this promised addition.
Dr. Jim Rourke congratulated the auxiliary --
members for their interest in the hospital and the
recent provision of some new equipment for the
use of the medical staff.

Dr. Jim Rourke, recently named vice-
president of the medical staff and replacing Dr.
Bruce Thomson on the board, made a report
Monday evening for Dr. Ken Lambert who was
unable to attend.
Dr. Rourke said theasurgical staff at AM&G
was very anxious for the hospital's operating
room supervisor, Gillian Vernon, to attend an
upcoming conference for operating room
supervisors.
Board members promised to look into the
matter immediately.

Administrator at AM&G Elmer Taylor saiohthe
hospital's disaster plan is ,to be reviewed'Ind
updated in the next few days. He said the main
object will be to have accurate names and
telephone numbers of persons to call in case of a
disaster.
When the disaster plan is updated, copies of it
will be forwarded to -all hospital board members
and to all participating persons as well as to
various industries, businesses and community-
based organizations.
Mrs. Jo. Berry suggested that the hospital
auxiliary members be pressed into service in
case of a disaster, and asked that plans include
:-instructions for these ladies.
'-`It-tends to be the hospital that develops a
disaster plan," commented Elmer Taylor, "but
we need the co-operation of all other agencies in
the community."
Mrs. R.C. McCallum reminded the board that
in a recent Woodstock disaster only one
_telephone call was made b-efore the lines were
down and service was unavailable.
Elmer Taylor said the hospital's telephone
system operates under all conditions according
to a recent Bell Telephone report. He said the
hospital would become emergency headquarters
in time of a disaster.

Board member Jo Berry reported on the Small
Hospitals Conference she had attended and said
she believes, the Ontario Minister. of Health,
Dennis Timbrell, has a "more enlightened view
of small hospitals than he had a few months
ago."
Mrs. Berry said she feels the Goderich board
has had much to do with the change in attitude
toward small hospitals.,
Board chairman Gordon Crabb admitted he
was "very impressed" with the minister's at-
titude. Crabb said the minister stated the small
hospitals would "remain a focus for community
health care".

The former pediatrics department on the
hospital's first floor will become a combined
patient sitting room and meeting room. The cost
of refurbishing the room right next to the office
of administrator Elmer Taylor will be about $250
for painting and lighting.
Bruce Potter, chairman of the building
committee at the hospital, said the room will be
pressed into, service when the board meetings
take place or when larger facilities are required
for other meetings than are presently available
in the administrator's office.
Administrator Elmer Taylor feels sure there
is sufficient furniture throughout the hospital to
furnish the area.
Potter said a patient room is directly across
the hall from the proposed sitting -meeting room,
but felt there should he no noise problems for
anyone because of its location.

An audio-visual system available from Lond's
University Hospital has caught the imagination
of the Goderich doctors and the board members
of Alexandra Marine and General Hospital.
The system provides a direct link up between
University Hospital and. the local hospital and
has a number of. applications for patient care and
staff education.
A film is available to demonstrate the, system
and it is expected to he shown at the next medical
staff meeting.
"It's a very interesting concept," commented
Administrator Elmer Taylor.
"It has tremendous potential," said Chairman
`Gordon Crabb.

Two former hospital employees and one
retired hoard member were honored by the
board of AM&Q Monday evening prior to the
regular board meeting.
Rose Slater and Janice McDonald are retired
from service at the hospital and Andy Boutilier is
noln r
o ge a board member. All received gifts.
" Boutilier said he remembered serving on the
hospital hoard in the early years when meetings
were held on a board held table height by saw
horses.
