Season closed on elk BY RON REID As hunters across Ontario oil up their guns for the annual deer hunt, only a few may have noticed that this year one less species •is available as a target. The Natural Resources Ministry has announced that Ontario's tiny herd of elk will no longer be subjected`to the stress of hunting, with no open season on this species anywhere in the province. While the Ministry's move has been applauded by conservationists, its import is- hardly earth- shaking. Only about five elk had been shot each year, from a herd of • perhaps several hundred in the Burwash and Chapleau , areas. These elk are not even native - Ontario's original elk population was pushed to extinction -in the late. 1800s. Experimental introductions of western elk took place in several places across Ontario in the 1930s and a peak population of about 400 resulted. As so often happens when man tampers with . the balance of nature, the results of°the introduction didn't go smoothly. .Wildlife researchers thought they detected a connection between a parasitic liver disease in livestock and, the herd of. elk. As a result, in the early 1950s, attempts were made to eradicate the herd, with little success. These efforts were finally abandoned, but an, open_. season.. was retained to ,control elk numbers. Eventually-, the elk were vindicated - the suspected disease con- nection had never really• existed. The herd con- tinues to dwindle, but the Ministry has finally recognized that elk are a feature of kcal interest, and that ' .hunting pressures should be removed to help 'their survival, FOR CHILDREN FROM FOUR TO SIX YEARS OLD THURSDAY -4:00 TO 5:00 P.M. -'50' FOR 2 GAMES LITTLE BOWL 524-9966.
