More people visit Goderich
BY JEFF SEDDON
Although the predicted
wave of ' American
tourists that were ex-
pected to visit Canada
this past summer never
arrived Goderich still
was visited by more
people in 1979 than in
1978.
The final tabulation of
visitors to the Goderich
Tourist .Information
booth indicated tha
Goderich was visited by
almost50 percent more
people this year.
In 1978 9,247 people
dropped into the tourist
booth for information
during the summer
months while in 1979 that
figure swelled to 13,241,
an increase of 43 percent.
Although ,the figures
from the tourist booth can
onlybe used as a
guideline for guaging
summer traffic it is
generally accepted as a
good indicator of tourist
movements•. The figures
show that more people
vacationed in this area
than before but they don't
show whether the people
stopped at the booth on'
their way through
Goderich or were staying
in town any length of
time.
One thing the tourist
booth figures do clearly
show, is that the long
awaited invasion of
American tourists never
came. Gas shortages in
the United States and an,
attractive exchange rate
between the Canadian
and U.S. dollar had' the
Canadian tourist industry
hopeful that Americans
would come north for a
vacation.
That never happened.
Figures at the Goderich
information booth are
similar and in many
cases better than other
areas . Of southwestern
Ontario and the Goderich
numbers are not im-
pressive. Last year 1,902
Americans stopped at the
booth for information or
direction. This year 2,031
stopped, an increase of
129 or slightly less than
seven percent.
South Western Ontario
(SWOTA), of which.
Goderich is a member,
could report no happy
new from other areas
according to councillor
Jim .Searls, councils
representative on the
tourist promotion
committee. Searls said he
had' checked with other
areas of southwestern
Ontario and found the
Americans never
t arrived.
Searls said not only_did
the number of American
tourists increase
marginally in - some
places it declined. He
said Stratford figures
show , that nearly 30
percent fewer American
tourists visited the
Festival City this year
than last.
The tourist booth staff
makes a habit of asking
people coming in for
information to sign a
guest book indicating
where they're from and
how many in their party.
That guest log is what
was used for the figures
on American tourists.
As well as American
visitors people from
countries other than the
U.S. and Canada visited
Goderich. Last year 262

people from foreign
countries were in town
and this year 310, an
increase of 18 percent.
More Canadians chose
this area for vacations
than last year. Canadian
visitors totaled 5,233 last
year and this year• were
up 17 percent to 4,318.
The largest increase
was in people that
dropped into the booth
but didn't sign in. Staff at
the ..1309th_ recorded_.t.,8.50--_
unsigned visitors in 1978
and 6,582 this y.ear. That
increase, 4,732, was . the
main reason the total
number of visitors to the
booth is up this, year.
SWOTA commented
that the Goderich booth is
a successful) operation
claiming the only thing it
lacked was „signs. The
association felt. the
location of the booth was
good, staff was capable,
hours acceptable and
parking plentiful but felt
that to ensure that
everyone that may use
the facility knows it is
there better signs were
needed.
