Dear Editor:
I .have noted your
remarks about our
proposed visit to
Goderich, in the near
future, partly so that
Mrs. Reading - by
courtesy, Contessa Di
Attri, because she is the
only child of Antonion
Luigi, (three additional
Christian names, and her
Mother (Ne Little of Nova
Scotia) - who has heard of
my part in designing and
erecting the elevator with
its well known reputation
over the world as being
the fastest grain handling
plait ever built, and
holding all records for its
capacity, may see it.
And partly too for my
own satisfaction since
Jesses Troman Houser,
the contractor who un-
dertook the job, put his
arm around my shoulders
while we were standing
watching the initial
operation of the plant,
when it was finished.
He said, "Sandy, long
after you are dead (and
me too) that will stand as
an appropriate
monument to your in-
ventive genius and
mechanical ability:"
P.R.O. writes
Poppy Campaign

I replied, "And to your
initiative in proposing the
idea of building the most
efficient elevator in the
world."
He was a grand man,
and I would rather have
his words to remember
than the degree of Doctor
of Applied Science which
I was accorded many
years later, by a
university in Boston.
I am also curious to
meet again any of the
men, such as Mr. Parsons
and others of the
Goderich staff whom I
knew and sometimes
explained to them what I
was doing.
Mrs. Reading and I
have been wanderers and
explorers for most of our
lives, so used to living in
the wilds that we do not
feel quite at home in a
town.
Goderich was probably
the first of my initial
successes, but there have
been many occasions
since, when my opinions
were directly opposed to
all other professionals in
the mining and ex-
ploration business.
Without exception I
was proved right and
Dear Editor,
We have learned from
Comrade Howard
Carroll, the Poppy
Chairman of Legion
Branch 109 this year, that
letters are being sent now
to business concerns and
organizations requesting
their purchase of a
wreath or the option of a
donation to the Poppy
Fund which is also ac-
ceptable to the Branch.
Last year, the Poppy
Campaign of Branch 109
set a record for the
Branch when $4,100 was
contributed to the Poppy,
Fund.
Since our last Poppy
Campaign, $2,100 from
the Poppy Fund was used
to provide three cribs for
the pediatric department

wheelchair was pur-
chased for use on a loan
basis.
A total of $500 was
distributed in bursaries
to veterans' children who
needed assistance to
further their education
beyond the secondary
school level.
Prizes were purchased
for the Remembrance
Day poems and essay
contest which is
prom.oted__in—the area
schools.
The Woodstock
Disaster Fund received
$200 which was to be
directed towards the aid
of veterans in that area.
A donation of $1,000 was
made towards the pur-
chase of a specially
equipped van which is
used to support the Home
Dialysis Program in
Southwestern Ontario
whith includes several
war veterans dependent
on this service.
This year, the Poppy
Committee of Legion
Branch 109 will hold a
house to house canvass on
the afternoon of,Sunday,
November. 4. Poppy
boxes will be placed in
strategic locations in the
community from
November 5 to November
11.
The continued
generosity of each citizen
in support of the Legion
Branch 109 Poppy Fund
will allow Branch 109 to
exceed the financial
return of 1978 and to
again contribute worthy
services to the veteran
i d the community in the
rem ing year.
Yours truly,
Neil Shaw,
P.R.O.,
Legion Branch 109.

incidentally made
millionaires out off five or
six men who profited
from my aidvice and
experience, besides
others who got on the
"wagon" at the right
time to profit from its
success.
So now I have the
reputation of being the
oldest geologist and
engineer, still active in
the mining and ex-
ploration business in
America and also of
being invariably suc-
cessful in the things I
have undertaken. Now
that I have a big mining
property of my own I am
rather anticipating my
last success, which may
also prove to be the most
noteworthy - I hope.
While in Goderich next
Monday, probably I
would also like to in-,
terview the ,local
photographer who may
have the negatives of
photos that were made of
me in 1922 when I was
somewhat better to look
at than I am at present.
I shall hope to meet you
when we are in town
briefly. And I could wish
that Avery Neff might be
there also, though he had
a home in Port Dover.
Allow me to remain,
Yours most sincerely
A. L. (Sandy)
