Although this was John's first entry in a marathon, his time of three hours and 30 minutes placed him in the top third of the finishers. The Skylon race is a gruelling 2fi.2 mile run beginning in Buffalo, New York, continuing through Fort Erie and ending in Niagara Falls, Ontario. This year's marathon attracted 3,500 entrants from all over the world, many of whom hoped only ,to be able to cover the distance. A few of the fastest runners will be hack on this same course next May attempting to qualify in the U.S. Marathon Trials. John Talbot, formerly of Clinton and now living at, Meneset Park outside Codt'rich, began his Tips for Hallowe'en Many parents are Concerned for the safety of their children during Hallowe'en and the Canada Safety Council suggests the following safety tips which parents may wish to discuss with their children before they set out on their happy expedition. 1. Wear light coloured, flame resistant costumes with retro -reflective strippings so that you are easily seen by motorists. 2. Clothing must be short enough to avoid a tripping hazard. 3. Face masks must not .obstruct vision. Make-up is preferable. 4. Make your " calfs along one side of the street. and then along the other: Do not criss-cross. Cross the street at in- tersections n- tersection.,s----0-r— crosswalks. 5. Curry a flashlight to see better and to he better seen. • 6. Travel in groups of yo four or five. Nicknamed 'The Marathon Man' by his friends, he has become a familiar sight in the streets of Goderich as he trains daily in upwards of 15. mile distances. He is always interested in hearing from other runners in the area too. Congratulations go out to John for his success in ,Saturday's race. +++ If you have Christmas parcels to send overseas this year and you want to be sure those parcels will arrive on time, you'd better get moving. The . post office deadlines for parcels being sent to Great Britain and Northern Ireland are November 9 for surface mail (mail transported by boat) and December 7 for air mail. The deadlines for Europe, Central and South America and the West Indies are October 19 (that's TOMORROW) for surface mail and November 30 for air mail. For Asia, Africa, Australia and New Zealand, you've missed the surface mail de.adline of October 13 but you can still safely send your parcels by air mail on or before November 23. These deadlines apply to parcels only. The deadlines for Christmas cards and letters are different. You can check those out with the post ' office. And please make sure your parcels are securely packaged and clearly marked with proper postage before sending them anywhere. +++ Well, there is only one day left to attend the Christmas Country Fair at Saltford Valley Hall. So far, trying to get people to submit recipes has been like beating my head against a brick wall. The response has been less than enthusiastic. While we have lots of favorite Christmas season recipes from individuals and a few dessert recipes from children, we have vir- tually none from any service clubs (category - party foods and beverages) or church groups (category -main course). Fifty dollar prizes are being offered for the best ..Tid Bits... recipes in each category. All recipes will be printed in a special cook book which will be coming out about November 8.
