214 grads at GDCI
Graduates from Year 4
and Year 5 of the 1978-79
class at Goderich District
Collegiate Institute filed
into the main auditorium
Friday evening to receive
their awards.
Not all of the 214 •men
and women were present
at the school's annual
commencement exer-
cises but many were on
hand to watch their
classmates and -friends
pick up special awards,
and to line up to cross the
stage to get their own
diplomas and shields..

Nine. Ontario •scholars,
were honored `and
received $100 cheques
from the provincial
government for their
labors. An Ontario
scholar has to. Have 80
percent or better in a full
course load in Year 5 to
qualify for the award.
GDCI's nine Ontario
scholars are Jon . Barz,
Donald Coughlan, Robert
Cox, Pamela Lambert,
David Simpson,, Richard
Sizer, David Smith,.
Audrey Vanden Heuve°r
and Diane Van Rooy.
The Robert MacKay
Memorial Scholarship
was won by Donald
Coughlan who had the
highest average in Grade
13 last spring.
Other scholarship
winners were Audrey
Vanden Heuvel who took
the A.J.Moore Memorial
Scholarship; Donald
Coughlan who won the
A.M.Robertson award for
mathematics and
science; and Karen
Melady who was awarded
the W.H.Robertson
scholarship for the
highest marks in English
in Grades 11 and 12.
Betty Errington
received the R.D.Munro
scholarship for the rural
student who has
specialized in com-
mercial and -or technical
subjects, and has
registered in an in-
stitution of higher
learning.
Brian Melick was the
urban winner of the same
award.
David Simpson won the
Alexander McKenzie
Education Endowment
trust fund award.
The William Cutt
Memorial Scholarship,
presented this year by
Terry Worsell, was
awarded in 1979 to Robert
Cox. This award is given
annually o e s u.en
achieving the highest
standing in two
languages, other than
English, in Grades 12 and
13 at GDCI.
Mrs. Kay Leamen
made the Goderich
Community Credit Union
awards. Joanne Van Osch
was awarded the prize for
the highest average over
four years in commercial
subjects, and Jane
Eichholz earned .. the
award for the student in
Grade 12 with the best
average in Grade 12
commercial subjects.
Ms.. Eichholz also won
on, a of two Sin .a1 -Star
awards presented by
R.G.Shrier, president of
Signal -Star Publishing
Ltd.
Ms. Eichholz -was the
recipient•'of the award to
the' student with the
highest final marks in
Grade 12 Communication
and Business
Procedures.
The other Signal -Star
award was won by Denise
Aubut who was the
student in Grade 12
Communications and
Business Procedures
With the highest net
typing speed.
The Town of Goderich
award, which is
presented annually to a
deserving Goderich
student graduating from
Richard Sizer
Richard Sizer was
awarded the Town of
Goderich Award at GDCI
commence/bent exer-
cises Friday night as the
Grade 13 student at the
school enrolled in an
institution of higher
learning who graduated
with the highest
scholastic standing. Slier
also received the George
Buchanan Music Award,
given to a student
enrolled in the music
program at GDCI and has
participated extra-
currlcularly in music.
Sizer is also an Ontario
scholar.
GDCI with high
scholastic standing who
is registered in an in-
stitution of higher
learning; was won by
Richard Sizer. The award
was presented this year
by Deputy -reeve Bob
Allen.
Sizer also won the
George. Buchanan Music
Award given to a worthy
student who was enrolled
in the music program at
GDCI who has also
participated extra-
curricularly in the music
program of the school.
That award ~ was
presented by Harold
Bettger, a former GDCI
teacher.

award for a Grade 12

The Goderich Rotary
Club's William E.Elliott
scholarship to a Grade 13
graduating student who
as enrolled in a course in
journalism or in a course
that 'could lead to a
career in journalism, was
won by Robert Cox.
Rotarian Norm Pickell
made that presentation.
Four graduating
students received
William E.Elliott
Creative Writing awards,
also presented by Norm
Pickell. They were Jan
Caesar, Pam Lambert,
John Kloeze .and Jean-
nette Little.
Andrew Koopmans
received from
D.W.Jewitt, the Canadian
Chemical. Workers Union
(Local 16) award which is
given annually to a
graduating student who
has successfully com-
pleted Grade 12
economics.
The GDCI staff awards
this year went to Anne
Marie Murphy and Joni
Thompson.
These young ladies
were elected by a staff
vote. Qualities con-
sidered were academic
achievement, leadership
and participation in the
extra -curricular
program of the school. "
'Both are enrolled in in-
stitutions of higher
learning, another
prerequisite.

Anne Marie Murphy and Joni Thompson were honored
by their teachers at the Goderich District Collegiate
Institute commencement exercises Friday night when
they were named recipients of the GDCI Staff Awards.
Thompson, right, and Murphy were chosen for the
awards because of their academic achievement,
leadership and participation in extra curricular
programs at the school. Both graduates are enrolled in
an institution of higher learning.
