REPRINTED FROM
THE SALVATION
ARMY WAR CRY
Not much 'Golden
Rule' about school `days
any more!
The 'Education for
everyone' idea came
from the Christian
church. Now all
reminders of the
Christian faith are being
erased from our schools.
A Toronto Board of
Education is seeking
government permission
to get rid of the Lord's
Prayer. It is to be
replaced by a minute of
silent meditation.
This is supposed to be
out of consideration for
non-Christian teachers
and students.
Yet Jesus Christ is
never mentioned in the
prayer.
And the words of this
meditation could stand in
any culture — indeed in
any religious context —
as inspiring and helpful.
The Lord's Prayer is to
go because it offends the
non-Christian.
But the Christian has
no protection from
godless and vulgar texts
thaeoffend him.
• Are We to throw up the
white flag of surrender?
And let the devil have
the school?
No!
The battle is not lost.
There :are positive
responses that can
remedy the lopsided
materialistic and
atheistic emphasis in
education.
One is the Christian
school. You can get one
going with only.. 20
students and two full-
time teachers. It can
follow government
curriculum guidelines.
the spiritual dimension
and moral challenge that
secular schools don't
inister
provide.
If there's a Christian
school in your town,
check it out. Find out how
Bible based are its
principles (and its
principal). artd how God -
responsive it is in its daily
activities.
The cheque you write
for your children's tuition
may be the best gift you
ever gave them.
However, many
Christians are concerned
that separate Christian
schools will cut us off
from the unsaved people
with whom our faith
should be shared.
There are, therefore,
two less radical solutions.
Instead of a separate
school, we can have an
additional school. A
serious and intelligent.
Christian education
system to supplement
(and counteract) the six
hours each day of non-
Christian instruction.
Sunday school isn't
enough.
Even the best taught 30
minutelesson won't of-
fset th50 half hour time
slots the school has at its
disposal each week.
Christian kids may
have to go to another
school at the end of the
regular school day. Just
like some•Jewish kids go
to Hebrew school after
the secular system has
had its innings.
And we've got to care
enough about Christian
education to support the
bonus school even if
paper routes and part
time jobs have to be
study
how you treat your
closest neighbours
your own kids. With how
much you care about the
other children who live on
the same street as you do.
Like it or not, school
always has and always
will be more than
'Reading, 'riting and
'rithmetic.'
Religion is the fourth
'R' of education.
Today many gods are
presented: science,
wealth, sensuality, brain
power, freedom, self.
There is no way you can
prevent those idols from
being paraded before our
kids.
But doesn't the, living
cod; our Lord Jesus
Christ have a right to be
seen and heard to?
'And the child grew,
and waxed strong in
spirit,, filled with.
wisdom: and the grace of'
God was upon Him'

working with leather as a

recipients of hand crafted

But considering Bob's
talent and ingenuity there
won't be any
dissapointment around
the Kelly hpusehold at
Christmas.
The Kellys, now
retired, live on a small
parcel of land near
Brookside School, and
Bob devotes much of his
time to his passion and
