Improve
flood
warning
A $31,500 provincial
grant will be used by the
Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority to
improve the flood war-
ning system for Lhe 2,989
square km (1,154 square
mile) area under its
jurisdiction.
In announcing approval.
of the grant, Natural
Resources Minister
James Auld said that the
proposed improvements
to the system will not only
more effectively service
the flood warning needs
of the watershed
residents but will also
facilitate future
management of the water
resources within the
Maitland Authority.
Estimated total cost of
the project which will be
undertaken over a five
year period is $70,000.
Nixon

provincial leader by the
Caucus in November
1966, and subsequently by
a full leadership con-
vention in January 1967.
He led the Party through
three general elections
until his successor, Stuart
Smith, became leader in
February 1976.
While he was leader;
Liberal representation in
the House increased td 36
seats, the highest number
since the defeat of his
father's Liberal gover-
nment in 1943.
On June 8, 1977,
Toronto's Globe and. Mail
editorialized about Bob
Nixon. as. follows: "In
every election, however,
there .are a few of these.
The former Liberal
Leader, running in Brant -
Oxford -Norfolk, is one of
the most knowledgeable -
and human - politicians in
this. province. He has
wisdom and experience
that would be valuable in
any Legislature."
A few months earlier,
columnist Norman
Webster had written,
"the former leader of the
Ontario Liberal Party is
settling rather nicely into
the role of elder
statesman around
Queen's Park. After nine
hard -slogging, often
bitterly disappointing
years as head of the Outs,
he is getting some time
now to widen his
horizons...In-the house he
–r -has a wonderful time,
standing up regularly to
lecture the government,
drawing from a store of
facts, figures and stories
unequalled by any
politician in Ontario."
Bob is particularly
proud of two honours he -
•has received: his Indian
name, , Shadegarenhes,
which was also conferred
on his father by the Six
Nations Indians
(meaning Trees of Equal
Height) ; • and his
honorary Doctor of Laws
degree from McMaster
University.
Accepting the'bonorary
degree, he proclaimed his
view that "individuals -
at least here in Canada -
have never had a greater
opportunity for self-
• realisation., a -•c
complishrnent, and
contentment than we
have here and,now. I am
no longer a young man,
but people my age and
younger have never had
to go to war to defend our
system and our way of
life..People my age and
younger have never
experienced the
economic deprivation,
the soul -cracking
pressures of economic
depression...I believe
that the endeavour, the
struggling of theologians,
politicians, educators and
scientists in the past has
culminated in presenting
us with this style of life
and opportunity
unequalled in history.
On the subject of
Canada's future, Bob
believes that what we
need is a commitment to
Canadian nation- aA
building. Only a
"visionary" response to
separatism will succeed.
"I'm confident this
country will stick
together and come out of
this, bilingual and multi-
cdltural."
Hijs father would have
appreciated his com-
ment, "This matter is far
too important to be leftto
the politicians."
