Weerasooriya combined for a point total of 871/2 to take first place in the North-South section of play at the October 2 meeting •of the goderich Bridge Club. There were eight tables in play. Auleen Curry and Jean Papernick were second with 801/2 points and Jean Cook and Verna Worthy third with 741/2 points. Theresa Donatis and Arlene Gibbons topped the East-West division with 83 points. The teams of Joanne Duckworth and Lee Ryan and Eleanor Erskine and mary Donnelly tied for second with 76 points. Next Tuesday, October 9,the Goderich Bridge Club will host a special night to raise money for the Woodstock area Tornado Disaster Relief. Fund. All entry fees paid by, members will be matched by the club treasury and forwarded to the fund. 1 BYTD BY TA The GDCI junior Vikings evened their Huron -Perth Conference record at 1-1 with a lopsided 61.0 victory over Stratford Central in bigh school football action Thursday in Stratford. The Vikings got going early, scoring .... .�.,.._ on their first offensive drive of the game, capped by a one - yard dive for a touch- down by Dave McDonald. Strong defensive play forced a fumble by the Ramblers on- their first play from scrimmage, and McDonald pounced on the loose ball. After a 22 -yard sweep and a two- point conversion, both by Mike Wedlock, the Vikings led 14-0. Unable to move the hall, Stratford again gave it up to the Vikings who 'completed another long drive with a four -yard dive for a touchdown by Rick Stahl. Dave McDonald kicked the convert. Following the next kickoff, the Ramblers tried their luck in the air but again ran into trouble. Dave McDonald in- tercepted a wayward Stratford pass and ran 25 yards for another Jr. Vikings win tournament BYTD Combining aggressive offensive and defensive play with .poise and team play rare for so early in the season, the GDCI Vikings won their own junior ,girls' basketball tournament here *Saturday. The Vikings put together wins over three London schools en route to the championship, defeating Medway. 44-29 in first round play, get- ting by Montcalm 50-30 in the semi-finals and defeating Saunders 39-32 in the championship final. Robin MacDonald, co - captain of the Vikings, was the top scorer of the tournament, with 47 points in the three games, with 12 against Medway, 414 against Montcalm and 21 in the final with Saunders. Heather Minielly, a transfer student from London Montcalm to GDCI was also a standout for the `Vikings with 35 points on the day's play. Co - captain Teresa Kovacs and Mona Gleason also played key roles for the Jr. girls win two BYTD points and Teresa Kovacs and Susan Thompson got The GDCI junior girls one each. Vikings are 2-0 in league play following victories over South Huron in Exeter last Wednesday and over Centra Huron here Monday. Showing good balance and a good deal of basketball skill, the Vikings got by South Huron 35-30, after leading 19-12 at half-time. Robin MacDonald had 12 points to lead the Vikings. Mona Gleason an.d_He&th.er Minielly hit for seven points. Teresa Kovacs and Janice McClinchey rciiinded out the Viking scoring with four points each. The Vikings defeated Central Huron 31-17 Monday. Robin MacDonald was top scorer of the game with 15 points. Mona Gleason had six and Heather Minielly added five. Barb Conlon and Mary O'Neill each contributed two GDCI golf team third The GDCI golf team competed in the Huron - Perth Championships last Friday held "in Seaforth. The team consisted of Tony Bedard, .Mike Paquette, lcec e more an. o MacDonald. The GDCI foursome finished third in the competition behind Stratford Northwestern and South Huron. Mike Paquette was. the outstanding golfer for GDCI as he posted a fine score of 74. The best score of the day was 73. All four golfers demonstrated the Viking spirit of com- petition as' well as the sportsmanship expected from athletes of this school. Mai was not meant to nit gas and oil! Coach John Geiger was also able to go to his well -stocked bench for good efforts from Janice McClinchey, Barb Conlon, Teresa Donnelly and Mary O'Neill: Other Vikings getting on the scoresheet were Susan Thompson, Kim Schutz, Theresa Osborn, Andrea De'Winter and Sue Muffitt. Stratford Central won the consolation cham- pionship with a 40-35 victory over Medway. Saunders reached the championship final with a 56-22 win over Sarnia St. Clair and a 43-32 victory over London Lucas. Mitchell was the other competing school. CHHL HOCKEY MEETING Sunday, October 7th at 1 p.m. In the GODERICH ARENA All team members to attend for elections for 1979/80 season. New members interested in playing must attend this meeting. This time Chris Pitre intercepted the ball and one play later the Vikes had another touchdown when they scored on a 17 - yard pitch pass from Mike Wedlock 'to Andy Masse. With the, start of the second quarter and the game obviously under control, Viking coaches Bill Garrow and Bruce Baker took their starting players off the field and went the rest of the game G with a basically, rookie lineup. Backup quarterback Paul Day scored two touchdowns, one in the second quarter on an eight -yard sweep, the other on a 21 -yard ramble in the final quarter. Rob Little punched over another Viking touch- down on a six-yard blast play in the second quarter. In addition to the two pass in- terceptions, the Vikings blocked two• punts and recovered one fumble. Dave McDonald and Scot , Kernighan were credited with the blocked punts. The Vikings make their next start here today (Thursday) against the F.E. Madill Mustangs who are reportedly much. improvedfrom last season.
