Baha'i sources said
recently.
Police guards are now
posted around the house
of the Bab who is a
central figure of the
Baha'i Faith.
"Extensive damage
was done, including the
destruction of the roof
and walls of the room
where the Baha'i Faith
began," said Professor '
Jameson Bond, an
executive officer of the
National Spiritual
Assembly of the. Baha'is
of Canada. "All doors and
windows in the lower
storey are gone, and
many walls throughout
the house have been torn
down."
"Violence by fanatics
in Iranian society has
characterized the cen-
tury -long persecution of
the Baha'i Faith," said
Mr. Bond. "Several
months ago all Baha'i
properties were con-
fiscated by the Iranian
, government which
assured Baha'is in
writing that the seizure
was for the purpose of
protecting these sacred
properties."
When the House of the
Bab was first attacked by
a crowd of over 100, in-
cluding 25 armed
revolutionary guardsmen
earlier, anguished
protests were made by
the Baha'i world com-
munity to the govern-
ment of Iran. ,Urgent
appeals were also made ,
to governments
throughout the world, to
intervene on behalf of the

Iran. In Canada, cables
were sent to Prime
Minister Joe Clark and •

Solar energy important to farmers
Solar energy may be as
important to (armers in
the future as the
workhorse was a century
ago, but with the help of
research, it may be
easier to harness.
At the University of
Guelph, agricultural
engineers are already
developing solar
collection systems for
livestock barns. This five-
year project is funded by
the Ontario Ministry of
Agriculture and Food, the
Ontario Ministry of
Energy, and the Ontario
Pork Producers'
Association.
Researchers have been
measuring the potential
of solar energy with a '
model collector for the
past two years. Active
field testing is scheduled
to begin next year.
"There are limitations
to solar energy in this
part of the world,” says
Prof. Frank Theakston,
of the School of
Engineering. "However,
we can collect enough
heat for livestock
buildings."
Prof. Theakston
believes solar energy
may have a brighter
future in agricultural
operations than in other
types of applications
because of the large roof
and -wall areas qt.,
agricultural buildings.
The only drawback is
cost.
"We have been trying
to develop an inexpensive
collector that farmers
can install on existing
barns without changing
the structure."
Although most solar
experts agree that a 60- to
65 -degree slope is
necessary to collect solar
energy, University of,
Guelph tests show that a
conventional sloping roof
and vertical sidewall will
give sufficient slope if
there is good snow cover.
At the Arkell Research
Station, near Guelph,
trials will use solar
collectors to provide
space heating for pigs.
The collectors will be
installed on five con-
ventional Canada Plan
Service barns with dif-
ferent roof slopes and
sidewalis.
The collector which will
be used in the ex-
periments is very simple
in design. A black steel
plate is used to absorb the
sun's he.at. This plate is
covered with fiberglas to
trap the heated air. The
underside of the steel
plate is well -insulated to
prevent heat loss. The
heat collected is drawn
away from the collector
and' blown over the pigs
by a centrifugal fan. No
water is used in the
system.
Cost estimates of the
experimental system
range from $3 to $6 per
square foot, compared to
the cost of commercial
collectors which now
average about $16 per
square foot.
Farmers may be able
to reduce their heating
costs using this system,
