- Company wins first
It didn't take long.
Canada Company
joined the Goderich
Industrial League just
four years ago and
Monday night they
captured their first
league championship
with a sweep in the best -
of -five final series
against Gords, the
defending league
champs.
The Company joined
the league in 1976 and
made the playoffs despite
playing below .500 ball.
They didn't last long
however as the, McGee
Pontiacs disposed of
them in two straight
games.
But the Company
improved under the
direction of Jack Evans
and Jim Donnelly and
with the acquisition of
Stan Doherty, became
one of the top teams in the
league.
This season they
clinched their division
title with an impressive
record but endured a long
semi-final 'series with
French before winning in
the bottom of the seventh
inning in the fifth and
deciding game.
Canada Company then
swept • the best -of -final
against Gords with
victories of 7-0,2-0 and 6-5.
They won the cham-
pionship -Monday scoring
a single run in the bottom
of the eighth inning for a
6-5 win after Gords forced
extra innings with a two-
runlly in the top of the
se vnth.
Tom O'Keefe scored.
the winning run in the
eighth after belting a one
out single. Bill Durst and
Bryan Bowman -followed
with singles to produce
the winning run. -
.Both teams, scored
early in the game and
Canada Company led-, 5-3
after three innings. They_
scored two in the 'first on
•a two -run homer by
Casey Wiidgen with Tom
O'Brien aboard and Tom
O'Keefe nailed a solo
homer in the second.
Gords responded with a
three -run rally in their
half of the second inning
on two its and three
Company errors. But the
Company rebounded
from the defensive lapse
with.two runs in the third
to again take the Lead.
O'Brien and Wildgen
scored on a single by Glen'
Tigert.
Canada Company
maintained the 5-3 lead
until the seventh inning
when Phil Petrie and Lee
Arbour hit successive
singles and scored on
Company errors.
The two runs forced
extra innings but suc-
cessive singles by
O'Keefe, Durst and
Bowman produced the
winning run.
Wildgen was the
game's top batter, with
three hits in,four trips to
the plate. He drove in two
runs and scored 'another.
Team-mates .O'Keefe
and Bowman chipped in
with two hits apiece as
the trio provided seven of
the team's 11 hits.
Lee Arbour and Jim
Ginn had two hits apiece
for Gords.
Stan Doherty pitched
the first seven innings for
Canada Company and
gave way to Glen Tigert,
who took care of Gords in
the eighth. The duo
allowed five runs on
seven hits and struck out
four batters.
Dave Scholl and Des
Courtney shared the
mound duties for Gords
giving up six runs on 11
hits.
In the first game of the
series, Canada Company
jumped on six Gords
errors, four in one inning,
as they racked up a 7-0
win and a one -game lead
in the series last Wed-
nesday.
The game was
scoreless until the third
inning when Mike Don-
nelly tripled and scored
on Tigert's triple, Canada
Company then added to
the one -run lead with a
five run outburst in the
fourth inning on two hits
and four Gords errors.
Wildgen delivered the
key blow of the inning , a
two -run double.
' They added their final
run as McDonald walked'
and came all the way
home on wild pitches.
Tigert picked up the
win in the first game
tossing a neat three hitter
and striking out four. He
had a no-hitter going until
Ginn singled with two out
title
in the sixth inning. He
had retired 17 batters in a
row until the Ginn single.
He ran into troiible in
the seventh -inning when
Petrie and Watt hit
successive single with
two out but fhe got the
last batter to pop up.
Tigert was also the only
batter in the game with
two hits: both of them
singles.
Tigert again turned in a
superlative performance
in the second game
spinning. a stingy three -
hitter as the Company
won 2-1 •
O'Keefe sparked the
offence with two hits in
three at bats and scored a
run. He led off the second
inning with a single and
trotted home on three
wild pitches.

Ray Vanstone worked for better than an hour to land this salmon but refused to
take all the credit for the catch. Ray said his friend Brian Fitzsimons (right) had as
much to do with catching the fish as he did. Ray -said -.he was using Brian's pole
when the fish latched on to Brian's aligator lure. The fish, which tipped the scales
at a little over 30 pounds, was pulled out of the Maitland River near the site of the
former town dump. (photo by Jeff Seddon)

Tennis team sets new record
The Goderich District
Collegiate Institute tennis
team broke a 'record set
by GDCI last year when it
captured its fourth
consecutive Huron -Perth
ehampionship.
The GDCI team
amassed 21 points in a
day of tennis action
against other secondary
schools in the two
counties to win the title..
• The championship was
truly a team effort ac-
cording to coach Bob
Dick who said every
member of the GDC,I club
managed at .least "one of
the school's 21 points.
The Huron -Perth
tournament, staged this
year in Grand Bend, was
a single knock out. That
meant that any player in
singles or doubles action
that lost a game was out
of the tourney.
Dick said that every
GDCI player won their
, opening round earning
points for the school.
The team also sported
three championships on
the day. John Brown and
Jim Costello captured the
• mens' doubles while
Marg and Barb Conlon
won the ladies' doubles.
Will Denomme and
Tracey MacEwan
teamed up, to win the
mixed doubles title.
All three pairings will
now go on to Western
Ontario Secondary School
Association action at the
Windemere Tennis Club
in London to try for a
berth in All -Ontario
finals.
Goderich was seven
points up on second place
St. Mary's when the day's
points were tallied.
