Children's GODERICH SIGNAL essays point up special l BY•THE REVEREND W.A. LUDWIG. Goderich Christian Reformed Church I think the Goderich Signal -Star editorial staff is to be complimented for their efforts in organizing the "Editor For -A -Day" contest. For, whether or not they did so deliberately, they did s,l4cceed in laying bare essential matters of public significance that we would otherwise tend to overlook. What our leading and more gifted children say and think is a great barometer', less of what they have to offer than of what we have been of- fering them. Frankly, from what I observed in the Goderich Signal -Star of September 6, that isn't - much. Standing in the Judeo- Christian tradition, one cannot help but sense from the commentaries of these children that the great teachings of the Judeo-Christian Faith have been pretty well completely erased. from their minds and replaced by an obsession with material well-being coupled with a blinding sense of self-worth. Under the guise of (inherent) "rights" a monstrous appetite of explosive egotism is obviously being fed. A God -centered view of reality which confesses that all things finally make sense only as they are held together in the inister's study Nimismaimme Son, Jesus Christ (Colossians 1: 17) has been successfully- ex- changed for a view of life that makes man and his selfish cravings the measure of all things. What are we teaching our children of duties and responsibilities? Our Lord, -who considered it his "meat and drink" not to do His own thing but the will of His heavenly Father (even when it wasn't always easy exactly), said of the little children: "FORBID THEM NOT to come unto me; for of such is the Kingdom of Heaven." How far we have allowed them to drift from Him. As a minister of the Gospel (and parent of six young children), I am deeply concerned that we take what these children wrote in the Goderich Signal -Star on September 6 seriously. It is a stirring commentary on our failure to deliver. As one of them writes:' "Parents who abuse 'their children physically i fl and mentally are, in my opinion, unworthy of rearing children and should be prosecuted. Some parents 'hurt' their children unconsciously in an effort to protect them." How much more of a judgment rests upon us, not for "physical" and "mental" but for the spiritual abuse of our children? Our Lord who so tenderly embraced little children also dealt most severely with the "spiritual" abuse of children when he said: "Whoever causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a great millstone fastened round his neck and to be drowned in the depth of the sea."
