About 26 percent of the 1979 graduating class have gone farming, compared to only five percent of 1967 to 1969 classes. "The proportion keeps going up because young people who want to farm realize they need more education," says Mr. Jenkinson, academic counsellor.'' "The in- creased popularity of farming as a professional alternative is also ,a reflection of the positive prices of farm products and farm incomes." However, the increased h ASHFIELD TOWNSHIP situated on over two acres of land, brick veneered, five bedroom home. This home has had a great deal of renovations, large rooms, original woodwork. The owners are retiring -possession this fall. WARREN TERRY ZINN ' ZINN R,R.27uTKCNOW 529-/ 350 popularity of farming is resulting in shortages of qualified graduates for agricultural industry. Agricultural industry employs about 26 percent of graduates now, compared to 17 percent in the late 1960s, but the number of graduates with farm experience has declined. "Agricultural industry wants graduates with farm backgrounds," says Mr. Jenkinson. "About one-third of the 1979 graduates came from farm backgrounds but many have gone farming. A shortage of graduates with farm experience who wish to work in agricultural industry is developing. Many farm - raised young people could find rewarding em- ployment in agricultural industry." The survey also in- dicates that many graduates begin farming after five to 10 years experience in 'agricultural industry. This results in more frequent job vacancies, and increasing em- ployment opportunities for new graduates. Another • significant trend that appeared in the survey was the declining interest in graduate studies. In the mid -60s, more than one- quarter of the graduates pursued graduate studies. Now, post- graduate studyattracts only about 11 percent of the graduates. "Canada is becoming critically short of Canadian -trained agricultural scientists," says Mr. Jenkinson. "There are extrerriely few qualified applicants for vacancies at federal research stations, and at agricultural faculties and colleges." Mr, Jenkinson feels part of the reason for the declining interest in graduate study is in- dustry's strong demand for graduates with bachelor of science degrees in agriculture. Average starting salaries of graduates in the late 1960s was about $6,750, compared to $14,600 for 1979 graduates. The many job op- portunities continue to attract students to the Ontario Agricultural College each year. In the past decade, the graduating class has doubled, and early registration indicates a first-year enrolment of 360 students this fall.
