The GDCI Senior
Vikings scored a con-
vincing 44 - 0 victory over
Sarnia Central in
exhibition football played
here Friday.
The game, the only pre-
season tilt for the
Vikings, showed that
coach Ray Donnelly has
once again assembled a
fine team to continue the
Goderich school's
perennial run at the
Huron -Perth Conference
championship.
The Vikings find
themselves with a
reduced schedule of
games this season, since
only four other schools in
the Conference have
fielded senior teams.
Central Huron (Clin-
ton) and Wingham were
the two latest schools to
drop senior football,
leaving only the •two
Stratford schools along
with Listowel and South
Huron (Exeter) to
compete against the
Vikings.
Donnelly expressed
rrii
es reduce
disappointment at the
shrinkingof the league,
feeling that the short
schedule was not
adequate in relation to
the amount of time and
work put in at practices
by his team. The only
positive note is that the
remaining teams come
from the schools with the
best footballprograms
and every game in the
schedule should be
competitive.
The Vikings open their
regular schedule today
(Thursday) in Stratford,
against the Northwestern
Huskies.
The Vikings showed
good timing and
execution offensively,
with their inside running
game being particularly
effective in the exhibition
game with Sarnia'.
Darryl Beattie ,~scored
the only touchdown of the
first quarter on a six yard
sweep. That play had
been set up by runs of 25
and 12 yards by Randy
Little, who shduld be the
scourge of the Conference
this season with his ex-
cellent running ability.
Little went 25 yards on
a sweep in the second
quarter for the first of his
two touchdowns. In the
third quarter, he rambled
60 yards off -tackle for the
other.
Stuart Crew showed his
speed on a play that went
98 yards for a Viking
major in the second
to four
quarter. Dennis Donnelly
threw to Little for a two-
point conversion for that
one.
Diminutive Mike
Hodges scored the
Viking's fifth touchdown
on a 25 yard sweep in the
third quarter and Dennis
Donnelly got the final
major score on a 48 yard
quarter back sweep in the
fourth quarter.
Kicker Eric Mitchell
booted five converts and
one single for the Vikings.
Although the Vikings
shut out Sarnia, coach
Donnelly felt there was
much room for im-
provement on the part of
his defensive unit. Many
of his new players played
defence and Donnelly
feels they will improve as
they gain experience.

Vikings were supposed to
be having. a re -building
yearthis season, but you
'couldn't -tell it by their
performance in their 60
0 victory over Sarnia
Central in exhibition
football played here last
Friday.
After a winning the
Huron Perth cham-
pionship last year, with a
team stacked with -three
year veterans; coaches
Bill Garrow and .Bruce
Baker were not expecting
such early season success
with this year's team,
loaded with 29 rookies.
Granted, the Vikings
did have an advantage of
an extra week's practice
on the Centaurs,but the
Vikings ",.did . show c•oq-
siVerable promise. They
begin league action this
week in Stratford where
they play the -Nor-
thwestern Huskies today
(Thursday).

,Leafs defeated Stothers 7-
3 Thursday night to
another hunting season straight Godeapture rich Men's
Slow Pitch cham-
pionship.
Once again the hunting
season is here. Each year
hunting accidents bring
tragedy -to many
families,, usually because
the most simple rules
have been broken.
What can you do?
Never consume alcohol
before or during a hunt.
Know the identifying
features of the game you
intend to hunt.
Never shoot in the
direction of buildings or
livestock.
You cannot depend on
the co.mmon sense of the
hunter beside you -- wear
bright orange." .
The handling of
firearms requires great
care..The Ontario
Provincil Police Force
reminds 'von that there
are several basic gun -
handling rules. •
Always handle a gun as
if it were loaded.
Never climb a tree or
fence with a loaded
firearm.
Always carry your gun
so that you can control
the direction •of the
muzzle.
Unload unattended
firearms.
'Few hunting deaths arm
accidents -- they are
usually caused by
negligence. With some
thought and care most of
them could have been
prevented.
Don't be at either end of
an "accident", use
common sense measures
and enjoy a safe hunting
trip.
