BY THE REVEREND JOHN D. M. WOOD VICTORIA STREET UNITED CHURCH APARTHEID is a very familiar word. This South African system of separation of the races has been severely criticized. On the other hand, defenders off South Africa point out problems which people face in the many other African countries which have become in- dependent. But these countries do not profess to be Christian countries. The white South Africans claim to be Christians and say that they can find support for apartheid in the Bible. But surely they are only using part of the Bible. If one looks at it all, one would find it impossible to justify the apartheid position. How can they claim that their use of black' labour conforms with Christian principles? Many blacks are forced to live away from their families while they work alone in white areas. Pay standards for blacks and whites doing the same work are quite unequal. How can they justify passing a law against racial intermarriage? If people fall in love across racial barriers they should be free to marry as they are in most societies. How can they justify keeping Nelson Mandela in prison on Robben Island for life? His sin was to call- for the one man, one vote rule for South Africans of all groups. "The God who created the world and everything in it.....created every race of men of one stock, to inhabit the whole earth's surface" (Acts 3:26 NEB). "It is through faith that Goderich man dies in hospital WILLIAM WHEELER William Wheeler of Goderich Township , died in Alexandra Marine and General Hospital after a lengthy illness on Friday, September 7 at the age of 80. , He was born ,in Kent, England to Charles and Bessie (Gayle) Wheeler on July 23, 1899": He worked as an ac- countant with the Federal Government until his retirement in 1959. He is survived by his wife, Doris. (Wiles); two sons, Jack of Bayfield. and Ricky at home; two sisters; one brother; two grandchildren, William of Montreal and Mrs. Gary (Marsha) Triebner of Bayfield; and one great-granddaughter, Jennifer Triebner. A • memorial service will be held in Pickering at a later date for the late Mr. Wheeler. Interment•of cremated remains was in the Maitland Cemetery. School Bus Safety Weak What cen YOU do to help z 040. 23-3O all of you are God's sons in union with Christ Jesus. So there is no difference between Jews and Gentiles, between slaves dnd free men, between men and women; you are all one in union with Christ Jesus" (Galatians 3:26 TEV). The tragedy of South '.Africa is compounded by its claim to be Christian. They had the opportunity of building a society where all races could share equally, but instead have tried to give legal sanction to an immoral and unchristianidea, that the whites must always remain above the rest. In the light of history, the beginning of the end of apartheid may be the death of Steve Biko, the 46th political detainee to die in police custody in recent years. Steve Biko was a black South ..African, 30 years old, and at the height of his powers. He was an Anglican layman of acute intellect, spiritual depth and moral courage, the pioneer of black con- sciousness and selfhood among 20 million non- white South Africans. His death is a supreme example of the fruits of inhumanity and fear1 which ' have been produced by the white South African regime which claims at the same time to be a guarantor and a centre of Christian f6ivilization. How long, 0 Lord? Steve Biko, meeting early death. like his Lord before him, personifies the confessing church in the third world, testifying.., to the costly solid ity of Christ an s 'followers which the world's rejected. are yyoou doing for thl¢ rest of your life?
