All clothes are inspected before being accepted by Mrs. Pam
Hassall of the Kiddie Corner; a service which buys and sells used
children's clothing. They must be ,clean with no rips or holes.
When they are sold, the former owner receives 70 percent of the
selling price and Mrs. Hassall receives 30 per cent. Here, she
shows some • of the racks of clothes to be found in her kids'
playroom -converted -store. (Photo'by Joanne Buchanan)

BY B AND B
Goderich Little Theatre
held its first' -meeting of
the season on September
5. It was well attended
and many topics were
under discussion. '
A new membership
ticket campaign com-
mittee was formed under
the Chairmanship of
Betty Etue. So please,
when approached to buy
a membership,
remember all the good,
plays and entertainment
we have provided -in the
past and what a terrific
season we have coming
up — Fiddler on the Roof
to start with. -
Membership costs are
up a little this year as we
- can't fight rising costs
forever, but nowhere will
you find better value —
three evenings' en-
tertainment for $10 adult,
and $5 junior. Get your,
tickets early and help us
to give you a bumper
year.
Mrs. Dorothy Wallace
came along to the
meeting to introduce a
guest speaker, Mr. B.
Bailey. He has been doing
a study on Polley's
Livery Stable and ex-
plained some of the uses
it will be available for
after the alterations.
Sounds like a grand
project to put your help
behind. It certainly will
be an asset to our town.
While the meeting was
being held, director
Eleanor Robinson was
holding auditions for
"Fiddler". They were

Well, she tells us the
response was fantastic.
More than 50 people
came. She was very
pleased and had a hard
job deciding from so
many goOd"applicants.
Fiddler on The Roof is
now cast. If you didn't get

much for participating
and if you're interested,

One final thing, as

the babes have outgrown
-the clothes.
"People are really good
about what they turn in.
They understand if I'have
to turn something down. I
think they are so pleased
to have some place to go
with their clothes.
Sometimes I'm just a
storage servitce if nothing
else;22 says Mr—s,—Hassall.
She says that many
people don't know what to
du with their children's
used clothing. They don't
have any other children
to pass the clothes onto
and often the condition of
the clothes is too good for
them to simply be
discarded.
Mrs. Hassall admits
that there are certain
articles of clothing which
are turned into the Kiddy
Corner more often •than
others. There are plenty
of little girls' dresses in
stock because they are
not worn out so fast. But
little boys' clothing .uis
more scarce because it is
worn out much faster.
The majority of clothes
sold at the Kiddy Corner
are in the size ,2 to 12
category, says Mrs.
Hassall. The baby things
don't move as quickly
because new horn babies
often get numerous gifts
of clothing.
Each - person who
brings in an item of
clothing, gets a number.
That number is put on a
clothing tag (no names
are used) along with the
price of the item. When
the item is sold, the
'person who brought it in
gets 70 per 'cent of the
selling price and MrS.
Hassall gets 30 per cent.
The person does not
receive• any money until
the item of clothing he or
she brought in, is sold.
Mrs. Hassall is thinking"
of changing her profit
ratio to 60-40. She has a
lot of marking, book
work, sorting and ad-
vertising to do. All cost
her time and money.
The Kiddy Corner
service is starting to,
become more profitable
for her now, Mrs. Hassall
admits. But it wouldn't be
profitable at all if she
didn't operate it out of her
own home. She has
received calls from
people requesting' baby
furniture and maternity
clothes. If she had more
space, she could offer
such things, she says.
Sometimes -she thinks
she'd like to expand and
operate out of a store but
financially, this would not
be realistic, she says:
The clothes at the
Kiddy • Corner include
snow suits, coats and
hand knitted - outfits as
well as the regular
things. Blankets, toys,
shoes and boots are also
offered.
Mrs. Hassall says she
thinks a lot of "the people
who come to the Kiddy
Corner for the first time,
are hesitant about just
what to expect. But they
learn that just because
the clothing offered for
sale has been ..used,,
doesn't mean it isn't good
enough to be put on their
own child,r.en.
Mrs. Hassall doesn't
feel that she is. 'really
taking any business away
from the regular
children,'s clothing stores
with her service. She still
buys some new clothing
for her own children. She
admits that she can't
clothe them just out of the
Kiddy Corner. There are
some things she just
doesn't have in stock.
Besides, she offers a
place where parents can
sell their children's used
clothing and there aren't
many other -services
which offer that.
She feels her service is
needed. Brand new'
clothes can be extremely
expensive, especially for
people with several -
children. And clothing
children once they start
school Can really cut into
the family budget.
Mrs. Hassall's business
was fairly slow in' June

and July with one or two
people coming in every
few days. But her
business really picked up
in August just' before
school started and she
was quite pleased with
this response.
She advertises as being
open in the mornings but
she has had people come
over to her house -as_. late
as 9 p.m. looking for
dresses their little girls
can wear to birthday
parties the next day. If
people come at an
unusual hour, they
usually call in advance so
Mrs. Hassall says she
doesn't mind.
Mrs. Hassall has met a

service and she
thoroughly enjoys it. She
is hoping that it will
