Gord's Sports refused
to let a series opening loss
to McGee Pontiacs upset
them corning off the loss
to dump the Pontiacs
twice for a two game to
one lead in Industrial
league best of five playoff
action.
The Pontiacs edged
Gord's4-3 in the series'
opener but lost the next
two games 5-1 and 7-0.
Des Courtney got some
solid defense from his
teammates in the pivotal
third game and tossed ,a
six hitter for the shutout

squeaker into a 7-0 rout.
Lee Arbour scored in
the top of the first for
Gord's and the run stood
as the winner. Arbour
- drilled a double, moved -to -
third on -a sacrifice, and
scored on a single by
Dave Scholl.
The Pontiacs
threatened to tie the
game several times in the
first six innings but
couldn't come up with the
key hits. Ron Sowerby hit
a two out double in the
first but was left stranded

grounded out.
Ken Daer and Russ
Pruder both singled in the
second with one out but
John Phillip popped up
and Deb Shewfelt hit into
a fielder's choice that got

hits while 'striking out
one.
In the second game of
the set Gord's used two
late inning flurries to
dumpt McGee's 5-1 and
tie things up. The Pon-
tiacs managed their only
run in the first inning
while Gord's pushed
three over in the fifth and
two in the sixth.
Russ Pr-uder----reached
first on an error to start
the first and moved
around on a single by
Doug Spitzig. Paul Kelly
sacrificed to store
Pruder. Spitzig used a
wild pitch to reach third
with one out but Courtney
got Daer to ground out
,and Rick Sowerby flew
out to right to end the
inning.
McGee stranded at
least one runner in every
inning failing to come up
with the clutch hitting
needed to score runs. Ron
Sowerby reached first on
an error with none out to
start the second but was
left on base. Spitzig_
singled in the third with
one out but Ken Daer was
caught stealing after he
singled and Gord's ' got
out of the inning with no
damage.
Rick Sowerby started
the third with a single and
got ;,all die way to third
before Deb Shewfelt
grounded out to end the
threat. In the fifth Pruder
lead off with a double but
Courtney retired the side
to leave him there. In the
sixth Ron Sowerby drew
a one out walk but Gord's
turned a double play. In_
the final inning McGee
put two men an but
shortstop Dennis
Williamson stabbed a line
drive and doubled off the
runner to end the inning
and the game.
Gord's came up as big
with their bats as they did
with their gloves. Down
one in the fifth they put
the game away with a
three run burst that
started when Jim Ginn
cracked a one out single.
-Lee Arbour singled to
move Ginn around and
Dave Scholl drove in the
tying and winning run
with a two out double.
Williamson singled Scholl
home with an insurance
marker.
Gord's added two more
in the final inning for
winner Des Courtney who
gave up siX a hits and
struck out two. Ken Daer
was the loser despite and
eight hitter with four
strikeouts.
An error in the sixth
inning proved to befatal
to Gord's in the series'
opener. Tied at three
second baseman Dave
Scholl mishandled Paul
Kelly's hit -leaving Kelly
at first. Ken Daer singled
to move Kelly to third
with none out. `'Russ
Pruder lofted a ball to
right field allowing Kelly
to score the winning run,.
McGee got on the board
for lead
in the first after holding
off a Gord's threat in the
same inning. Gord's put
three men on in the first
inning but three infield
outs ended the threat with
no damage.
Clare Harman started
the McGee first -drilling a
single,. nnovjng ..tosecond,
on a sacrifice and scoring
on a Gord's error. In` the
second Ron Sowerby used
two Cord's mistakes to
reach second scoring on
Russ Pruder's single.
John Phillip moved
Pruder around with a
single and Deb Shewfelt
drove him in with a
single. '
Gord's kept the game
close scoring once in the.
second and twice in the
sixth. Jim Ginn slapped a
one out single in the,
second and scored on a
single by Lee Arbour. fn .
the sixth Scholl used an
error to reach first and
scored on a triple by
Warren Watt. Watt tied
the game on a single by
Phil Petrie but the
Pontjgc5 .pushed the .
winner over In the bottom
of the inning for the one
game lead.
Dave Scholl was the
loser in the first game
giving up seven hits and
striking out one. Ken
Daer got the win on a
seven hitter striking out
three.
The fourth game of the
series will be Thursday
night with the fifth, if
necessary, going Sunday
at Agriculture Park.

Don McWhinney came
out on the top end of a
pitching duel with Stan
Doherty to boost French
Cleaners to a one game
lead' in their Industrial
league semi -filial with
Canada Company.
McWhinney tossed a
neat four hitter giving up
just one run while
Doherty was touched only
five times giving up a
pair of runs and the loss,
French had to come up
big in the final inning to
hold off a Company
charge and`seal the win.
Leading 2-0- French was
one • out away from a
shutout victory when the
Company bats started to
click.

Peewees
win title
The Goderich Township
pee wee boys' baseball
team won the league
championship. last Friday
night when they defeated
Hullett Township in two
games straight.
A .hard-working team,
combined with the ex-
cellent coaching of Bill
Harris and Daryl Abbott
are credited with being
the reasons for the win,
as the boys won 11 games
and only lost one all,
season. '
The ball season is now
over in the township and
so the end of the Year
wiener roast is planned
for this Friday night at 7
pm at the school ball
diamonyd for all boys who
signed/ up. At that time,
the ,tree colored team
pictures will be
distributed to each
Mayer.
The team organizers,

operation this year to

4-H girls
get started
The fall project for the
4-1-1 groups this year is
"needlepoint". Tiger
Dunlop 4-11 Group No. 2
with leaders Mrs. Guy
Emerson and Mrs.
Bentley, started their
project last Wednesday
evening, September 5
when they met at the
home of Mrs. Emerson at
Meneset Park.
Four girls attended and
after everyone was in-
troduced, the election of
Officers was held with the
following results:
president - Sheila •Fisher,
vice-president - Barb
Clark, secretary -
treasurer - Connie Willis
and press reporter -
Brenda Fisher. Mrs.
Emerson is the leader
and Mrs. Bentley is her
assistant.
The topics that were
discussed were covers,
type of yarn to use and
how to draw designs on
squares or samples. The
girls are to bring yarn
and ideas for a name and
cover to the next
meeting.

refreshment after the
meeting and the next
meeting will be Wed-
nesday, September 12 at 7
p.m.
