The game Sunday night was the second in a five game semi-final series between Canada Com- pany and French Cleaners. Canada Company jumped into a four run lead in the opening inning but' French chipped away at the deficit tying the game after four. Canada Company notched another run in the fifth but the Cleaners bounced back in the bottom of the inning to square things for the second time. For the next...... thirteen innings any spectators that hung in to watch the action got more than their money's worth. Clutch fielding by both teams combined with some superb pitching by both Stan Doherty and Don McWhinney sent the game- into 11 ektra in- nings. - Canada Company jumped all over McWhinney's offerings in the early going collecting four runs on half a dozen hits. French came up with a badly needed rally in the third to move to within one of the Company. The Company moved back into the lead in the fifth when Casey Wildgen used an error to reach rst and scored when D nnelly tripled. " Ray• Klages singled in the bottom of the inning and tied the game on a' fielder's choice to Ken- ,nedy. Deadlocked at five both teams played well under pressure making key plays time and again to keep their club in the game. • McWhinney retired the Company in order in the ninth and French looked like they might pull it out in the bottom of the in- ning. Jim McCarthy lead off with a triple but the Company infield came up big. Ray Klages tried a sacrifice but - McCarthy was caught at the plate. Doherty got the next two batters to ground out. In the tenth it was McWhinney's turn to bear down. Tom O'Keefe lead off with a double but McWhinney got Wildgen to pop to short, Donnelly to ground out and Austin to fly out to centre to leave O'Keefe at third. French came up with another promising rally in the twelfth after McWhinney had sent the Company down in order. Rob Standen lead off with a single but was caught on a fielder's choice by Ron Kla•ges. Wayne Kennedy singled Klages into scoring position but Doherty fanned Sutton to get out of the jam. • In the. thirteenth Tom Q'Brien drilled a two out triple but McWhinney got McDonald to ground out. For French Ray Klages singled with two out but Doherty got McWhinney to hit into a fielder's choice. In the fourteenth Bryan Bowman singled with one out but two long flys later the Company was back on the field. Standen used an error to reach first with none out for the Cleaners but Doherty got Klages and Kennedy to fly out. Casey Wildgen singled to start the fifteenth but was caught stealing. Phil Turner singled with one out for the Cleaners in the bottom of the inning but a pop up and fly out kept the Company alive. The Company put men on in both the sixteenth and seventeenth innings but still couldn't touch McWhinney for the key hit. In the eighteenth inning Terry Austin wai ed out a lead off walk and raced home on McDonald's double to score the winner. In the bottom of the inning Doherty stayed hot get4ing Turner to fly to centre, McCarthy to ground out and Ray Klages to pop up to .win t}ie game and tie the series. Doherty faced 78 batters and gave up 16 hits while getting two. strikeouts and the win. McWhinney faced 71 batsmen and gave up 19 hits 'striking out four in the losing effort. Leafs jump to two game edge The Goderich Paper Leafs jumped into a two game lead in the Goderich Men's Slowpitch league finals defeating Stothers 4-3 Sunday night and 12-4 Monday night. The Leafs needed a last inning rally to fight off a one run Stothers' lead and win the series' opener Sunday night. Stothers jumped to a one run lead in their` first trip to the plate. Alex MacDonald singled and moved to second on a throwing error. Randy Kerr slapped a single with two out to score the first run•of the game. MacDonald gave his club a two run edge in the fourth when he doubled and scored on Kerr's second hit in as many trips to the plate. Brian Thompson used a double and two Stothers' errors for an inside the park home run 'to cut the lead to one in the fifth inning. In the sixth Stothers got that run back wheft Jim ' Durnin singled and used a Leaf error to move into scoring position. Keith Good scored Durnin with a single. The Leafs pulled to within one in the sixth when Tom Thompson singled with one out. Jeff Seddon was Bent 'in to run for the injured Tho'mpson and scored from first on a standup double by Greg Rol ph. Jim Shropshall popped up but Dave Sykes, delivered a clutch • single to score Good and tie things up. With two out Brian E ickmeyer blooped a single to short right field. Sykestook off on the hit and managed to beat the throw to the plate to score the winning run. Leaf bats came alive in the second game of the set Monday night. The Leafs scored three in the second, three in the third, five in the fourth and one 'in the sixth to dump Stothers 12-4. Stothers did all . their scoring in the fourth inning which was highlighted by a towering shot by third' baseman Bill--Vanstone.
