Company wins marathon
Rob McDonald
slammed a one out double
to score Terry Austin in
the top of the eighteenth
inning to win the longest
game ever played in
Goderich Industrial
Fastball history.
The game Sunday night
was the second in a five
game semi-final series
between Canada Com-
pany and French
Cleaners. Canada
Company jumped into a
four run lead in the
opening inning but'
French chipped away at
the deficit tying the game
after four. Canada
Company notched
another run in the fifth
but the Cleaners bounced
back in the bottom of the
inning to square things
for the second time.
For the next...... thirteen
innings any spectators
that hung in to watch the
action got more than
their money's worth.
Clutch fielding by both
teams combined with
some superb pitching by
both Stan Doherty and
Don McWhinney sent the
game- into 11 ektra in-
nings. -
Canada Company
jumped all over
McWhinney's offerings in
the early going collecting
four runs on half a dozen
hits.
French came up with a
badly needed rally in the
third to move to within
one of the Company.
The Company moved
back into the lead in the
fifth when Casey Wildgen
used an error to reach
rst and scored when
D nnelly tripled. "
Ray• Klages singled in
the bottom of the inning
and tied the game on a'
fielder's choice to Ken-
,nedy.
Deadlocked at five both
teams played well under
pressure making key
plays time and again to
keep their club in the
game.
• McWhinney retired the
Company in order in the
ninth and French looked
like they might pull it out
in the bottom of the in-
ning. Jim McCarthy lead
off with a triple but the
Company infield came up
big. Ray Klages tried a
sacrifice but - McCarthy
was caught at the plate.
Doherty got the next two
batters to ground out.
In the tenth it was
McWhinney's turn to
bear down. Tom O'Keefe
lead off with a double but
McWhinney got Wildgen
to pop to short, Donnelly
to ground out and Austin
to fly out to centre to
leave O'Keefe at third.
French came up with
another promising rally
in the twelfth after
McWhinney had sent the
Company down in order.
Rob Standen lead off with
a single but was caught
on a fielder's choice by
Ron Kla•ges. Wayne
Kennedy singled Klages
into scoring position but
Doherty fanned Sutton to
get out of the jam. •
In the. thirteenth Tom
Q'Brien drilled a two out
triple but McWhinney got
McDonald to ground out.
For French Ray Klages
singled with two out but
Doherty got McWhinney
to hit into a fielder's
choice.
In the fourteenth Bryan
Bowman singled with one
out but two long flys later
the Company was back on
the field. Standen used an
error to reach first with
none out for the Cleaners
but Doherty got Klages
and Kennedy to fly out.
Casey Wildgen singled
to start the fifteenth but
was caught stealing. Phil
Turner singled with one
out for the Cleaners in the
bottom of the inning but a
pop up and fly out kept
the Company alive.
The Company put men
on in both the sixteenth
and seventeenth innings
but still couldn't touch
McWhinney for the key
hit. Doherty meanwhile
was riding a streak
