Cath Wooden leaves SSP for school
BY CATH WOODEN
The most important thing I've
learned here at the Signal -Star is to
look over my shoulder every few
minutes because they attack ya'
from behind every time.
It is with deep regret and a sore
'Wed( that I leave the Goderich
Signal -Star and -its ' slightly
deranged editorial staff. Most of
you out there know them only as
names above stories, but I have
learned to know them as wierd.
We'll start with Joanne
Buchannan, better known as
'Scoop'. Scoop is always nice to
people, but usually when she hangs
up the .phone she says, "Jeeez."
When. I came here, Scoop looked
nervous. "Good," she said. "Now
things are more even around a thermos, a typewriter, and
maybe a dead seagull.
The only things on Jeff Seddon's
desk are his feet and a Mad
magazine from June '77 (he reads
slow). A typical day in the office
with Jeff goes like this: he steps on
my foot, I step on his, he grabs me,
around the throat then flees to the
darkroom, I booby -trap his chair
and we spend the rest of the day
fixing it.
Jeff usually says, "det away
from me," and -or "I'll kill ya".
Spike doesn't believe in being Jeff (his nicknames range from
tidy. On his desk are mounds of Ace to Pusface) often appears to be
baseball score sheets, newspapers, ` in conference on the telephone
ashtrays, 499 business cards (he breaking big news stories, but
gave one to his mom), a four -piece looks are deceiving. He is really
dictionary, and something that talking to his wife about milk and
lookslike a pipe with aftershave in bread,or to his vet about his
it. Under his desk is a pair of boots, horses.
here."
I was shown several photographs
of Scoop and Jeff or Rave in
compromising positions: e g., a
full Nelson, a half Nelson, a
hammer lock. Then I got nervous.
I attribute Dave 'Spike' Sykes'
wierdness to his attendance at
Connestoga College. His favorite
sayings are, "I ain't sayin'," and
"Eat my shorts" which is probably
too gross to print in this paper.

NOTICE OF
INTENTION TO
DESIGNATE
A Heritage Property
In the matter of The Ontario Heritage Act, 1974, S.O.
Chapter 122,
And in the matter of the lands and premises set out
below, In the Province of Ontario:
Notice of
Intention to Designate
Take notice that the Council of the Corporation of The
Town of Goderich, on the 15th day of August, 1979,
decided to designate the lands and buildings, set out
below as a property of historIical value in interest under
the Ontario Heritage Act 19T4, S.O. Chapter 122.
Short statement of The Reasons for the Proposed
Designation:
The former Polley's Livery Stable is recommended for
designation for historical and architectural reasons.
The subject building is located on South Street im-
mediately to the south of the Bedford Hotel and for
many years was a livery stable before becoming an
automobile garage and finally a building centre. In
1977 the building was threatened by demolition, but
was purchased with the intent of being converted into a
community cultural centre.
The plan form of the stable is rectangular measuring
42 feet in width and approximately 127 feet in depth.
The constructional material is stone with massive
interior wood roof beams. From site observation, it
appears to have been built in three stages, with, the
first stage commencing in the mid 1840's and the final
stage being- completed in 1878. Architecturally the
most imposing stage fronts South Street and is
characterized by a shaped gable, cut stone and smacks
of design flamboyance akin to the elaborate wood
boom town-_fron.ts. of.the.pe.rio.d_..The south.. elevation •-•is-•-
also of architectural interest especially the eastermost
side with its stone face, twin gables and upper doors for
loading hay: At ground level is still visible a row of
narrow pointed arch windows. The east and north
elevations are simpler in design but hardly visible
because of the close proximity of the neighbouring
buildings. Originally three cupola roof vents were
located on top of the roof, according to a sketch of the'
stable• in the County Atlas (1879). Inside, the roof is
supported.by massive beams from which hung a floor
to store hay feed for the horses. These beams are now
visible with the removal of various false ceilings that,
were built •recently.
Polley's Livery Stable is of particular value also in the
context of the heritage building stock in the Town of
Goderich. It is the only surviving livery stable of size
which combined with its architectural and historical
interest makes it a worthy preservation under the
Ontario Heritage Act.
Notice of objection to the designation may be served on
the Clerk within thirty days of the 23rd day of August,
1'979.
Dated at Goderich this 23rd day of August,. 1979,
LARRY J. McCABE
