`Consumers should be
wary of unscrupulous
door-to-door salespeople
who use high pressure
scare tactics to sell ex-
pensive heat detectors,
consumer minister Frank
Drea warns.
"People are usually
approached by the
salesperson on the
retext that the will
'v.e - Vr
stration on how to
prevent fires in the
home," says Mr. Drea.
"It usually ends up with
the salesperson showing
tragic pictures of grief-
stricken families suf-
fering the loss of loved
ones after a fire. At that
point some consumers
are willing to buy almost
anything to prevent the
same thing happening to
them."
"In many cases heat
detectors are being
promoted . by these
salespeople as complete
fire protection systems
for the home," says Mr.
Drea. "Heat detectors
are not adequate sub-
stitutes for smoke
detectors as early
warning systems."
Heat detectors react to
heat rather than smoke
and thereforeusually
take longer to activate. A
person could be over-
come by smoke before a
heat detector sounds the
alert.

sumer and commercial
