Wednesday, August 15. Low gross for the day was won by Bob Gooding of Stratford shooting a Gerry- Mero attempts a putt during the annual men's invitational golf tournament at Sunset last Wednesday. Gerry was a prize winner in the first flight. He also won low gross in the annual Sifto Tournament on August 1S. (photo by Cath Wooden) fine 70. Low net was won fine 70. The Sunset members made a great showing with Dave Bedour, Randy Miller, Ray Bode, Leroy Bedour, Tony Bedard Jr., Stan Telford, Bob Green, Gerry Mero and Ralph Shefter, winning prizes in first flight. Second flight winners were • Laurie Colquhoun, Bruce Lyndon, Tim Bruce Tim O'Brien, , Larry Daer, Randy Hugill, Marcel Richard, Gary Duffy, Bill Yungblut and George Bolton. Third flight winners were Harold McPherson, Jim Mero, Mel Bogie, Don Fuller, Harry Williams, George Williams, Walter Sheardown, Ron Allin, Jim Green and Mike Donnelly. Iv . Congratulations fellows on a great day! The Sunset hosted the last men's Interclub for the season. Sunset came through again with Bob Greer winning the over all points for the four events. We made a fine showing for our finish team to enter the league with placing third., Gerry Merd' won low gross for the annual Sifto tournament held on Saturday past. Bill Reid also of the Sunset won low net. Brian Reeve and Gerald Morgan won low gross and low net on men's nite. First winners in each flight were Randy Miller, John Shaddick and Ron Allin. It certainly looks like a men's week of golf at the Sunset this past week but Plumbers lose final berth in playoff in extra innings at Moorefield The Goderich Little Plumbers held on for 14 innings against Moorefield August 16 before dropping a 9-8 decision and losing their only chance to make the Western Ontario Ladies Fastball League playoffs. The Plumbers needed a win against Moorefield to nail down eighth spot in the final standings of their 10 team league. Eight of the ten teams enter playoffs. The Plumbers enjoyed a two run edge in the bottom of the ninth but a fielding error with two out allowed Moorefield to push the tying run over. Undaunted the Plumbers notched the go ahead run in the second extra inning but errors wiped the edge out. Moorefield tied the game up a second time. In the 14th inning -Goderich looked like a sure bet. Sue and Mary Kolkman started the inning with singles. Diane Melick moved them both around with a sacrifice and a Moorefield error put Goderich ahea.d 8-6. The Plumbers con- tinued to make fielding errors giving up two unearned and one earned run in the bottom of the inning. Judy Nahrgana reached base on an error to start the inning and scored on a double by Terry Bramhill. Patti Youngblut singled and moved to third on an error that scored Bramhill. Ginny Franklin delivered a two out single to score Youngblut and end the season for the Little Plumbers. Goderich enjoyed one big inning against Moorefield. The Plum- bers pushed five runs over in the fourth inning to wipe out a two run deficit. Bev Wright started the inning with a Kane Hoffmeyer vie for championship There were 34 men out for Men's Night Monday night - I should have thought there would. have_ been more, it was such a lovely evening, but I guess holidays, etc, cut into the ranks. The first six winners were John Schneiker, Jack MacKenzie, Don MacEwan, Ralph Neville, Rick Leddy and Ross Patterson. All flight matches and Papernick Trophy matches are down to the finals and they will be played within the next week or two. . There was a lot of fun on Ladies' Night when everyone present turned ,in a__s?n-a.il.._prize...to _ be.. drawn for, so everyone was a winner! After golf, the ladies headed out for Jean Hanly's cottage and had a scrumptous corn roast. 'The first two winners in first flight were Hazel Beaver and Max Martin, with Jean Knight - and Verna Kane the first two in second flight. Marg Evans and Gail Bettger were winners for third flight and Joanne McCallum and Joanne Jasper took fourth flight,. Thanks Jean, it was fun! Ladies' -Champions-hip Trophy still has one round to be played and the Rose Bowl is down to the finalists with Verna Kane defeating Hazel Beaver and Chris Hof- fmeyer putting out Jean Knight. So, Verna and Chris, the Rose Bowl will certainly go to one of you! In the Scotch Two -Ball, the team of Hazel Beaver and - Gail Bettger has to fight it out with the team of Joan McDougall and Jean Knight for the Men's slowpitch in -semis All but-one--spot-in 'the second round of the Goderich Men's Slowpitch playoffs were decided this. week. The Paper Leafs, Coyotes and Stothers each grabbed a berth in the second round With the Firemen and Teachers facing each other tonight to decide the fourth and final spot. The first place Leafs dumped last place Ticker's Brickers in two straight and will face the Coyotes in the semi- finals. The Coyotes staged an upset ousting Meneset Park in a three game set. The Coyotes, who played one game below .500 and 'grabbed the second last playoff spot, went up against Menest, leaders in their division• with a 17 and -two record on the season. The Coyotes lost the first round of the set but Motocross Team Motocross competition returns to Hully Gully for the third round of the Ontario Team Championship Series. Over 300 riders are expected for the September 2nd race, including School Boy, Junior, Senior and Expert classes. J.J. Sounds vaguely familiar, doesn't it? 1863 gets to championship On Saturday, August 18, two teams from I.A.M. Local 1863 travelled to Stratford to .play in Stratford's_annual Slo-Pitch Tournament. In all, 23 teams were involved. The Red team coached by Al Fisher won their first two games Saturday but were put out in the third game Sunday b Forest City. Garb and Gear, Elevators Win The Blue team lost their first game by a disastrous score of 13 - 1 to London and continued into the "B" division. In the second game the Blues played Listowel and defeated them by a score of 13 - 9. Returning Sunday the Blue Machine continued to advance by soundly Goderich Garb and Gear and Goderich Elevators each grabbed a one game lead in their Central Huron Ladies Softball League best of three playoff series this.,. week with convincing wins. , Garb and Gear dropped the Goderich Sailorettes 18-13 in their series opener. The teams play the second game of the set Tuesday night. The Elevators dumped Joe's Girls 28-19 to move 'one game up in that round. That series also resumes Tuesday night. defeating Sebringville by a score of 22 -6 and gain a bye into the 'B' cham- pionship game. . In.. the championship game the Blues ran into a tough team from Shakespeare who con- tinually threatened to break the game open. But the Blue Machine per- sisted 1 and hung on to capture the "B" title by a score of 11 - 10. Not too bad for a team just formed at the last minute.'. Mary Kolkman reached base on an error and Melick and Karen MacKinnon drew walks to load the bags. - Karen Pond chipped a two run single and a fielder's choice and sacrifice allowed MacKinnon and Pond to score. Bev Wright went all 14 innings on the mound for Goderich facing 60 batters. She gave up 14 hits, walked two and struck out three. Bonnie Miller went the distance for Moorefield. She faced 59 batters and gave up 14 hits, walked five and struck out five. Leafs B runners up The Goderich Paper Leafs dropped a decision to Wally's BP of Stratford in the Mitchell Cornfest S1owpitch tournament on the weekend but managed to grab runner up money in the tourney's B division. The Leafs were hammered 13-0 by Wain's Fina of London in their tourney opener but bounced back to win their next two games and advance to the finals. • In the second game of the weekend tournament the Leafs defeated Walkerton 17-4 in five innings and doubled the Twin City Bombers 8-4 to advance to the final. we do have ladies' nite results to report. Low gross was won by Della Bedard •with Verna Kane winning low net. Second-.. flight was won by a tie between Thora McCabe and Joyce Bolton. Marg Smith won low net: Mary Lynne Telford won third flight and closest to the pin, while Anne Miller' won low net, an,d ' the longest drive (keep that three wood working Anne). Sue Gowen won low gross in fourth flight and Dorothy Boge won low net. On August 30 the ladies will be having a bar-b-que after golf so plan to at- tend.
