Bell of Goderich is not a teacher but after more than 30 years as a secretary in the field of education, she . has a lot of friends who are. Mrs. Bell retired on August 2 after 10 years as a secceetary with the Huron County Board of Education. Prior to that she was a secretary to several Huron County school inspectors for more than 20 years. In 1946 Mrs. Bell started working as a' secretary to school in- spector, Dr. R.O. Staples for 50 cents an hour. His offiee was above the Royal Bank in Goderich but he was seldom in so Mrs. Bell did not have regular office hours. "I .just did the work as it needed to be done," she recalls. She worked for the next nine years on a casual basis in the office above the Royal Bank. Then, in 1955 when the office was moved to a suite of three rooms in the newly constructed Huron County Court House, Mrs. Bell began working full- time for school in, 'spectors, Glen Gardiner and Jim Kinkead, They covered north and south Huron County. The move to the Court House was not Mrs. Bell's last. In 1969 the Huron County Board . of Education office was set -up in • al former nurses' residence in Clinton and Mrs. Bell went to work there. She moved once more after that to the present site of the Huron County.- Board of 4-H needle point class Would you like to learn about a fascinating (and habit-forming!) craft? The upcoming "Needlepoint" 4-H project, which will begin in September, involves a total of at least seven meetiags. Members' will. learn and work seven needlepoint stitches on a sampler which will then be made into coasters,'a wallhanging or a pillow. Instruction on the selection of colour schemes and how to create and, transfer original. •designs onto canvas will also be given. You may also have the opportunity to make a, "free choice" article. Have you ever thought about . ,neediepointing,_ napkin rings, belts, key tags, pin cushions, book covers and tie backs? It iS possible. Sound interesting? Are hope so. Those interested in becoming a member (whether you be a girl or boy, living in town or in the country) should contact Grace Bird or L Brenda Kisyk at the Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food in Clinton at 482-3428 or Zenith 7-2800 in regards to 'finding the nearest club for you or for more in- formation about 4-H. • Education office in Clinton. Besides working out of four different offices. 'throughout her years as an edticatiori secretary, Mrs. 'Bell has worked with numerous superintendents of education --Frank Madill, Harold Knisley, Jim Coulter, Don Kenwell, Ralph Smith and Bob. Allen. She has also worked with many men and women whose progress she has followed from high school through teachers' college. Mrs. Bell says she has enjoyed her work and has especially enjoyed meeting people. She did "a little bit. of everything" in her job but emphasizes that she was strictly involved in the academic side of things and had nothing to do with the business end of the board. At the beginning of June, the Huron County Board of Education held a retirement party at the White Carnation in Holmesville for all of its retiring staff. Mrs. Bell received a special scroll at that•time for her years of work. On the last day of school in June, the board office staff in Clinton held a retirement party especially for Mrs. Bell and presented her with a toaster oven. Last Friday evening a surprise retirement party was held for Mrs. Bell at the Candlelight Restaurant in• Goderich. Many of the people who she had worked for were present along with her son 'Norman from Thunder Bay and her daughter Nancy McIver from Oakville •and their spouses. She •even received a letter from Dr. Staples and was presented with a gift of luggage. Mrs. Bell hasn't had too much time for hobbies overthe past 30 -years although she likes to knit and sew. Now that she is retired, she looks forward to tending her garden, travelling and doing some volunteer work. r Mrs. •'1Glelvin Bell of Goderich has retired after more than 30 years.as an . education secretary and now- looks forward to travelling and doing some volunteer work. As there are no regular general meetings of Branch 109 until Sep- tember, - the following items from the July ex.ectltive meeting, chaired by president, Roy Mugford, are to be noted by members of Branch *i•109. • Decoration Day will be held at Maitland Cemetery at 2 p.m.. Members are asked to form up inside the gates of the cemetery. Dress includes berets and medals. The public is invited to attend this ceremony at which the Branch remembers those,. of the comrades who rest in Maitland Cemetery. The•service will. be held at the Veterans' Plot. An auction sale will be held at the Legion on Saturday, August 25.
