BUNDY The major racing event of the sailing season takes place this weekend ails the Goderich Sailing Club plays host to the Annual ' CHAMPION Regatta, Sunday, August 19. Upwards of 40 large sailing craft, ranging in size from 22 foot Abbotts and Tanzers, to 35 and 38 foot C and C's, are ex- pected to register for the Sunday morning event. Most of the craft will be arriving Saturday af- ternoon from Bayfield, after completing the Given Memorial race which starts from Bayfield Saturday morning, and finishes in Goderich. A dinner and an awards presentation for this race will be held at the Maitland Country Club Saturday evening. The CHAMPION Regatta, sponsored by Mr. Bruce Sully, President of CHAMPION Road Machinery Com- pany, and organized by rain Parsuus, Race Committed Chairman of the Goderich Sailing Club, will have three separate starts to ac- commodate the various sizes and Qlasses of boats participating. The smaller MORC Glass boats will start first, at approximately 10:15, followed by the in- termediate, PHRF boats. The 35 to 90 footers, Or IOR class, will start last at about 10:45. All the boats will follow a similar triangular course around marker buoys placed out in the lake, finishing off with a leeward (with the wind) run and then a windward (towards the wind) beat to the finish line. (photo by Dave Muffitt) Ziebart win jams up Maitland standings Ziebart created a bottleneck in the Maitland Division standings between three teams with an 8-4 win over Green and Parent in Industrial League play, Sunday. Canada Company has Clinched thedivision title but French, Lakeport said Ziebart,are still battling for positions with one game remaining in the schedule. French is currently in second place with 24 points, Ziebart third with 23 and Lakeport fourth with 24 points. The win over Green and Parent was the lith of the season for Ziebart against nine losses and a tie for 23 points. Ziebart put the game away in the middle in- nings scoring two runs in the second inning, one in the third and five in the fourth inning. Green and Parent scored a single run in the second inning and added three in the sixth. Rick Duc,worth, Al Sygrove and Wayne Doak sparked the Ziebart 10 hit attack with two hits apio-ce.. Duckworth singled in the second and scored a run and doubI d in the fourth to drive in two runs. Sygrove singled in the.. se.cond inning and scored and singled in the fourth to drive .in a run,. Doak singled a run in in the second inning and singled and scored in the fourth. Simon Langlois chipped in with a run - scoring double. Arnie Parker went the ,distance' in the victory allowing four runs on 10 hits. Dan Duncan and 'Jim Martin had two hits each for Green and Parent. Ziebart has one makeup game remaining. Goderich lost a 9-4 decision to Dashwood last Tuesday but rebounded for a 13-7 win over Seaforth, Monday. in the game last Tuesday Goderich led 4-1 after three innings of play before Dashwood erupted for a six -run rally in The bottom of the fourth in- ning to take the lead for the first time in the game. Dashwood added single runs in the fifth and sixth innings while Goderich scored one run in the fourth in the 9-4 loss. Goderich managed only six hits off the Dash- wood pitcher, two by Mike McCallum. , He singledto drive in a run in the second inning and singled and scored arun in the fourth. The Legion peewees got Guaranteed Investment Certificates 1 O%% W.E. (TED) WILLIAMS 324-7102 or 324-7665 back on the winning track Monday with a 13-7 win over Seaforth in a three and a half inning game in Goderich. Goderich scored six. runs in the first inning and seven in the second en route to the win. The peewees scored the 13 PART-TIME STUDIES AT runs on just three hits but the Seaforth pitcher gave up 15 walks. Daryl Madge, Robbie Gibbons and Richard Bedard each had one hit for Goderich. The course will necessitate frequent and rapid sail changes and short tacking tactics • which will soon separate the experienced sailor from the novice. Nevertheless, it promises to be an excitrg day for a(lconcerned! Fishers settle for fourth place Fisher Builders settled for fourth place in the Dunlop Division final standings splitting a pair of league games last week. Last Tuesday Fishers dropped a 4-3 decision to Graham Electric but rebounded for a 7-3 win over Gords, Wednesday. The split left Fisher with a final record of 10 wins and 12 losses, two points behind third place, Gords Sports. Fisher will meet the McGee Pontiacs in the opening best -of - three series beginning Sunday. In the game last Tuesday, Graham Electric scored a single run in the fifth to tie the game 2-2 and added two runs in the sixth en rout to the 4-3 win. Fraser Strong led the Electric 11 -hit assault Township peewees advance to final In Goderich, Township sofball action over the past -'week, the pee wee boys advanced to the finals by putting Varna out in , two games straight. They ,,played Benmiller Tuesday night in .the first game of that series. Lady luck didn't shine on the other Goderich Township teams, however, as most of them are done for the season. The midget girls were eliminated last week when they- lost to Stanley Township, and .,.the pee wee girls suffered a similar fate when Stanley also put them out. The tykes were beaten by by Benmiller 'A' and are through for the year, as they lost last Wed- nesday night and again on Monday night. However, the Monday night contest was a close one, w.th the game going the full seven innings before Benmiller won 9-8. Art Bell reported that the tykes were a very dedicated team, ' and finished with the same 17 devoted players that started out a spring training camp. Meanwhile, Art Bell's Gun Club has been challenged to a rematch by the Goderich Town- ship-Has'Beens, who were beaten before by the 'Bell team. The game will be played this Sunday af- ternoon at the Holmesville school diamond with the first pitch to be thrown out at 1:30 pm. Residents and fans alike are invited to bring out their lawn chairs and take in all the fun.. Fall series Sailing club race results Clear air and light breezes were the order of the day last Sunday for the third in the Fall series of club races. Seven boats, including one visiting boat, completed the course. So -me 'well - organized sail changes by Tom McGill and his crew saw him .overtake two other boats at the last leeward mark to finish third. John Hoy, Wally Pierson and Dennis LeBrun scored the. Fisher_ runs. Finer ' won their 10th game of the season Wednesday as .they pounded Gords for seven runs on, 12 hits in a 7-3 win. Doug Fisher, . Bob McBride, Jim Bell, Gerry Durst and Wally Pierson belted two hits each for Fisher as they scored a single run in the first inning, five in the second and one in the sixth. Doug Fisher scored three of the runs. Doug Fisher also picked up the win on the mound allowing three runs on eight hits and fanning three batters. Lee Arbour was the top Gords batter with three hits in four at bats. He knocked in all three Gords runs with a second inning triple and a fourth inning run -scoring single. Gords finished the year with 11 wins and 11 losses for third place in the Dunlop Division.
