Ontario Hydro who have a good safety record in their operation of Nuclear Powe: Stations must defend their record. They are asked to guarantee that a pipe won't break...a valve won't leak...no failures of any kind; in fact, produce a 100 percent safe station. How many auto in- dustries guarantee -that their product won't rust, develop faulty steering, brakes etc? Do the in- dustries that produce farm machinery guarantee that they won't roll over, rip off an arm, cut off a leg, foot etc? Where are their back-up systems for safety? Where are the com- missions and white papers investigating these accidents? Where are the protestors and demonstrators? These accidents are happening, have happened...not just possibilities...yet there is no big public outcry demanding that these ,vehicles be pulled off the roads and farms. Does our news media cover the highway slaughter with the zest and determination that they cover news out of the Nuclear Plants? Of course not, these ac- cidents happen every day, they expect people to be killed on the roads, they give it as much importance as the weather. Where • are the crusading reporters when Russia or the United States test their nuclear bombs? How many un- derground tests so far this'year7' 8 or 9. Where is the concerned public? What about the neutron bomb? Germ Warfare? Acid rain? These are not imaginery happenings or possibilities they are happening today, not a "could happen" theory. "CANDU" is Canada's peaceful use of the ATOM...dedicated men and women who are working together to . harness this great source of energy •to serve mankind, not• destroy it. It may not be 100 percent perfect, but, given the chance and the support of the Canadian people it could be man's answer to. the world's energy crisis. • Why is it so hard to accept the peaceful use of the atom? Why don't the protestors and demon- strators d.emand that the government speak out more firmly about the use of the atom to kill and destroy - the bomb is a more immediate danger than our nuclear power stations. No system .on earth is DEAR E DITDR 100 percent safe...man must strive for per- fection...but to do so, he must be allowed to work and develop, to expand his knowledge and ex- perience.:.to explore the unknown. Our scientists, engineers and technicians are striving for perfection, improving techniques and methods on the CANDU reactor - their record to date shows that they are rQsponsible people. They are not the careless, unfeeling, secretive persons some would lead us to believe. If the commission i4 willing to listen; to keep an open mind; compare Hydro's safety record to those of other industries; maybe the scientists and engineers can return to work and put their ex- perience and knowledge to the task at hand. The CANDU system was developed by Canadians for Canadians, feel proud of the fact, for it is something to boast about. Maybe the government should be inquiring as to whether or not a conspiracy exists to undermine Canada's Nuclear Power program - not thesafety of it. Gina Smiley R.R. 5 Kincardine, Ont. Truscott Dear Editor: On August 9 your paper ran the death notice of Steven Truscott's father: Fine, all well and good, but did you have to go back and remind the people why Steven Truscott was im- prisoned? ' Is the young bey charged with the murder of the 16 -year-old" jogger going to betried as an adult? Are his parents going tb have to go through hell like the Truscptts?Truscott has' done his time ,and is married and making a new life for himself; he even had to change his name. I suspect for the very reason that the people and the news media won't -leave ;him alone. I still firmly believe he's innocents Furthermore, I can't recall .any other con- victed murderer getting publicity after they've done their time like Truscott has.. Please let • society leave him alone. G. Garnett London Thanks Dear Editor, Open letter to employers: How time flies! Already we're nearing the erid of another summer. At this time we. would• like to extend a sincere "Thank You" for using the services of the Canada Employment Centre for•Students. Tho, work that you were able to. provide for the many .high ' sch.00l and post -secondary . students we h•ad on file, will help cut educational costs for many in the fall. For most students, the jobs you provided, gave them encouragement and the incentive to use their time constructively. The Student Offices will be operating again from February to September in 1980. '.V --e invite you to continue to make use of our services at that time. In the meantime, the regular Employment Centre is available to help you with your student manpower needs. Thank you for your support. Yours very truly, Susan H. Freeman, Student Placement Counsellor. Concert Dear Editor: I. would like to take this opportunity to thank you for publicizing in the "Tid Bits" column, the "Benefit Concert" held' on my behalf, August 5, 1979. Because of the generosity of the citizens of Goderich, I received more than. enough • to cover the cost of my law text books for the up- coming year. At this time, I wbuld also like to express my gratitude to the members of the Goderich Laketown Band. who , made the evening —gas -sib -Ie. In--•` particular, I would like to thank the band's director, Mrs. Donald Stewart, the president; Mrs. Bruce Baker, 'and the past president, Mrs: KenDunn who spearheaded this effort. Finally, as is the case. with any "Benefit" project, the success of the venture hinges upon the public's support. Thus, it was very gratifying for me to see such a sizeable turnout at•the concert. To those who attended, may I. convey my sincere thanks. Respectfully yours, Ernie McMillan. Sports Dear Editor, = At this time on behalf of the players, coaches, executive and followers 'of. the Goderich Fastball League, I want to express a sincere thank -you for the coverage this ball league has had in your paper. Since my COMING THIS SUNDAY NIGHT ONLY, AUGUST 19 HURON CHAPEL AUBURN 7:45 P.M. "THE TREBLE CLEFS" THIS GROUP HAS BEENSINGING TOGETHER FOR NINE YEARS & HAVE HAD 192 ENGAGEMENTS. THEY WILL PRESENT A TRIBUTE TO THE MARTYRS OF THE PAST PLUS Dr. Eric Sisel will spook EVERYONE WELCOME PASTpti REV, WAYNE GOOD PHONE: S23-9652 association with the league the last four years, I cannot recall one of our ' games not receiving a write-up in your paper. This is a great achievement on your part considering we play from 130-140. games a year. Now that the scorekee.ping for our league has been in the capable hands of Mrs. Williamson for some time,. I believe the team of Mrs. Williamson and your staff headed by Dave Sykes has come up with interesting and informative accounts of our games. I would also like to thank the Signal -Star staff for promoting other Fastball activities such as our Awards Banquet, Labour Day Tournament, and other fund .raising activities Besides helping us promote our major goal of providing an outlet for recreational activity for our members, we appreciate.the help of the community newspaper in our other goal of helping the community where we live. At this time I would also like to reply to ,your question in your last two editorial columns. regarding expansion or cutting back of your sports coverage. I believe that expansion of your - sports coverage would be the best answer for our community. At a time of growing sports par- ticipation in our town, I believe the newspaper, should try to keep moving with the times. I can see some of the problems you will have with expansion, but cutting back here would only be a backward step. Many of the members of our league, when questioned about your editorial question, stated the sport pages were the main reason they bought and read your paper. Some ballplayers ex- pressed some disap- pointment that the regular weekly standings. and batting statistics could not be included in; the paper like they were in the past. The Goderich Industrial Fastball League is very pleased with the help our local newspaper has given to our ball league, and we hope this relationship can continue for many more years. Yours truly, D.W. Currie President-Goderich Industrial Fastball League. For a ]ieens Qi a BARGAIN! Check the Classifieds, first! The place where buyers and sellers meet.
