(photos by Dave Sykes), PAGE Blue Jays win one, lose two The Goderich Blue Jays had a busy weekend, playing one league game and -three games in the Fourth . Annual Listowel A's Midget Baseball Tournament. The Jays won their WOAA league game here Sunday over Exeter, 10-5. In tournament games in Listowel, the Blue Jays lost their first round game Friday night by a close 7-6 score to the host Listowel team. Listowel went on to win the tournament cham- pionship with victories by scores of 5-1 over Owen Sound, 2-0 over Brantford and 1'4-7 over Forest. The Blue Jays stayed alive in the 'B' division at the tournament with a 7-6 win over Paris Saturday, but were eliminated in the. semi-finals by Essex 11-9 on Monday. The tour- nament featured some excellent baseball and drew large crowds to the Listowel Ball Park. The opening game of the tournament matched the two top teams in the In their second tour- nament game, the Blue Jays fell behind in the first inning when they gave up three runs to Paris. Steve Arbour, the starting Blue Jay hurler gave up the runs on one hit two walks and a hit batter. His mates com- mitted two errors behind him. The Jays came back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the first with Ted Doherty and Dan Maillet „crossing the plate. The Jays got two more to take the lead in the second and Larry Madge who took over from Arbour on the mound, blanked Paris until the sixth inning when four Goderich errors led to three Paris runs which put them ahead' 6-4. Dan Maillet tied it up with a home run over the right field fence, driving in Larry Madge who had singled ahead of him in the bottom of the sixth. Steve Arbour gave the Jays their margin of victory in the bottom of the seventh, driving in Don Elliott with the winning run. Madge was the winning pitcher, giving up "only one hit, walking one and striking out four in the six innings he pitched. The Blue Jays played their league game here Sunday, handing Exeter a 10-5 defeat. With their pitching' staff. depleted from the tournament games the Jays brought up Chris Pitre from the Bluewater Bantams and the young pitcher came up big for the Jays, giving up four hits, walking eight and striking out two in the four and one-third innings he pitched. Ted Doherty was effective in relief, giving up only one hit, walking three and striking out three in three and two-thirds innings. Dan Maillet, Larry Madge, Willie Denomme and Del Mitchelmore all had two hits apiece for Goderich while Jim Fritzley and Chris Petrie had one hit each. Monday, the Jays returned to Listowel for the B division semi-final tournament game against Essex. Smith win in Dungannon M.J. Smith Dungannon and the Signal -Star Paper Leafs captured the A and B championships respectively in the Third Annual Dungannon Slow Pitch Tournament on the weekend. It was the first year the hometeam has won the tournament and their victory ended a two-year win skein by Kingsbridge. Dungannon defeated Winthrop in the A final after the Winthrop Warriors had edged defending champions, Kingsbridge, in a .close semi-final contest. The Signal -Star Paper Leafs captured the B championship, winning three games after dropping their opening rOund match tb Wingham, 4-2. After the opening round loss the Leafs defeated Stothers, Kinloss and then pounded Belfast in the B final. For the first time, tournament organizers scheduled a Grand Championship game between the division winners. It was the third game of the day for both DungafYnon and the Leafs and the second in a row for Dungannon.
