Sunday at home, the Jays. defeated Owen Sound 3-1 and Monday in Kincardine, the Blue Jays battled the Kincardine Midgets to . a 6-6 tie. . 'The Goderich Midgets now have .a record of seven wins, three losses and one tie. Sunday's game here was a classic pitcher's duel, with the Jays' Dan Maillet coming out the winner. The game was played in just one hour and five minutes as. both teams played sound defensive baseball behind their hurlers. Maillet gave up only two hits, struck out six and walked four in the _seven inning game. His rival Bob Bowes gave up six hits, struck out .none and walked two Blue Jays. Larry Madge had two -hits for the . Blue Jays while Willie Denomme, Rob' McDonald, Del Mitchelmore and Ted Doherty had one hit each. Owen Sound scored their run in the first in- ning but were shut out from there on. The Jays tied it in'the third and took a 2-1 lead h' in the fourth. Ted Doherty scored both runs. Jim Fritzley crossed the plate with the insurance run in the home half of the sixth inning. Radio Shack Pacing Series as well as an overnight event. Dixon steered Dynainite Leray to victory in , the second division of the travelling series in a time of 2:04. The son of Seton Hanover-Briarwood Andrea cut the entire mile pacing the back end in 59.2. Future Fortune sat second throughout the mile but never threatened Dynamite Leray. Sent off as 1 - 5 - favourite Dynamite Leray paid -$2.60, $2.10 and $2.10 and combined with Future Fortune for an exactor of $10.40. The victories improved the Company's record - to 14 wins against only four losses. French jumped back into second place in the division winning two other games in a busy week. Canada Company stole the .game in the first meeting between the teams last Wednesday erupting for four runs in the seventh • inning to erase a 1-0 French lead and win 4-1: French broke the scoreless tie in the fifth inning as Rob Standen nailed a, two -out single and Ron Klages followed with a triple. But Doherty retired the next three California Cuties to play Lakeport Steelers Aug. 6 The Lakeport Steelers of the goderich Industrial Softball League will have their hands full when they play the California Cuties, a group of....er... ball persons on Moriday August 7 at Agriculture park. As evidenced by the accompanying photo, the renowned Cuties are out foragoodtime. The team is composed of top notch West east softball stars who dress and play in women's clothes. The team is now it its 27th season of operation and are often referried to as the Harlem Globetrotters of softball. But don't let the skirts and full busts fool you, up to this year the, team has compiled a record of 2.;550 vias and only 300 losses. The team originated in Compton, California in 1948 and was organized by owner and player, Trino Palacios. Palacios plays Madam Hilda on the Cuties and is not only a tricky pitcher but one of softball's best hitters. The zany Cuties offer such players as Susie, the world's smallest soft - bailer at 39 inches in height. Susie has little trouble reaching base with such a small strike zone. The eight person team will also feature Fifi the Flirt, Dumpy Dora, a hefty slugger and her slugging mate, Hefty Helen. Dora tips the scales at a mere 220 pounds and Hefty Helen sports an impressive batting ave -age of .450. Aug. 9 The Ron Feagan Memorial Pace will .be held at the Ron~ Feagan Memorial Centre Thursday, August 9. Racing---effici-als an- nounced that the August 9 racing card will include a special Memorial Pace race in honor of Feagan with a purse ot$3,000. Dedication ceremonies to rename the grandstand as the Ron Feagan Memorial Centre will take place after the second race' and several harness racing 'and OHA officials and dignitaries will be present for the ceremony• came from horses owned by the same family. Red Dodger (owned by Dr. W. Morley of Mildmay) won the first division of the Radio Shack Series in 2:04.1 while Speed N Smoke (owned by Robin Morley), trotted a mile in 2:10 taking a new lifetime mark. The daughter of Fnst Clip is out of owners' Carl and Grant Fisher own mare, Scarlet Slipper. -W'hi'le Faricy Slipper is only beginning her racing career, Mikes. Jimmy Lynn is in his final year of racing at age 14. Roebuck got the job done with Mikes Jimmy Lynn in a time of 2:11.3. Another 14 year-old, G D Direct, collected his second win in three starts this year with John Muir up. Owned by Dave Muir of Seaforth, G D Direct paced the mile in 2:11.4, Emma C Lee collected .. her third• win in six lifetime appearances for Carmen Kerr with John Duckworth driving. Entry fee for the day is $5 and each entrant will recieve a complimentary h at for participation. Registration will be accepted until September. 7 at the recreation office or 'through all league executives. Following registration all . participants names will be included' in the draw for the teams which will be made September 7. T_he philosophy behind the tournament is basically .fellowship and having different people of different leagues, talents and ages competing in a • fun, one -day -tournament. Two Goderich teams reached Port Elgin final The Port Elgin Tennis Club hosted an open mixed doubles tennis tournament last Sunday. This tournament will become an annual event held on the last Sunday of July. The 12 teams in the tournament came from Elmira, Wingham, Kincardine, Goderich and Port_E1gin..... . The Maitland Tennis Club was represented by Lori Hassel who played with Jim Costello and Marg Conlon,who played with Bob Dick. After a first round hye, Hassel and Costello reached the final by winning two, three -set matches against Port Elgin teamS- Conlon and Dick also had a first • round hye and .reached the final by defeating teams from Elmira and Wingham. The final was attended .by. •an'-t>,rn-pire, linesman and ball boys as well. as some Port Elgin spec- tators. Marg and Bob won the. final over Jim and Lori 6-4, 6-2. All four finalists received trophies. The consolation final was won by Ken and Daffney Ives of Port Elgin. Members of the other tennis clubs were im- pressed with the high caliber of play of the young Goderich com- petitors, Lori; Marg and Jim.
