Dam
to be
built
A dam that formed a
reservoir adjacent to the
old grist mill in the town
of Gorrie, Huron County,
will be rebuilt with the
help of a $38,937 Ontario
grant.
The grant to the
Maitland Valley Con-
servation Authority will
also protect some two
acres downstream for
recreational use.
A .1974 flood washed out
a gravel embankment
interrupting dam
reconstruction underway
at the time and
preventing construction
of a picnic shelter and
washroom changehouse
building downstream.
Subsequent
engineering studies
recommended the use of
simple concrete form and__
clay cove dike con-
struction to re-establish
the dam.
Total estimated cost of
the project: $75,000.
Public

• from page 6A
offer some feeding advice
where a wild animal or
bird is concerned. A zop is
essentially for captive
animals, rather than
injured or abandoned
wild ones.
Another fact which
must always be borne in
mind is that if a baby bird
or animal does •survive
the irregular feeding and
unusual food of its human
foster parent,then it.
becomes "imprinted" by
humans.
This means that rather
than being a wild
creature able to feed
itself and fend for itself, it
is partly domestic, ac-
customed to being fed
and protected. It is not,
and almost certainly will
never become again, self-
sufdficient`:.:Mid able to
survive in a wild habitat.
What happens when
winter comes and it is
necessary to protect the
creature against the cold
weather? Few people are
prepared to bring these
wild "pets- into the house
on a more or less per-
manent basis.
The best advice "given
to people by those who
are concerned with the
protection of wildljfe is
that if you find animals or
birds - especially young
ones - abandoned or
apparently lost, you
should leave them alone.
Almost invariably, they
become reunited with
their "families" if given
time and privacy to do so.
Creatures who appear'
injured or sick will
usually either improve on
their own, or death will
come. If this happens, it
is probable that it would
have been inevitable even
with • the best of treat-
ment.
Ministry of Natural
Resources' staff advise
Particular caution in
dealing with,an • ap-
parently sicinjured
creature. Although not
'every .."sick" animal is
rabid, the possibility
cannot be overlooked,
and rabies is a serious
disease which ,is carried
by mammals. If an
animal is unusually
tame, or acts^ sickly or
aggressively, leave it
alone - for your own sake.
The Health of Animals'
people. _do . not .wish . to _ .. .
examine it for rabies
unless there has been
actual contact between it
and a domestic animal or
human. If this has not
occurred the animal can
simply be disposed of or
buried.
The advice offered by
Ministry officials is
neither callous or un-
feeling. It is based on the
experience and
knowledge of the people
whose main job is the
protection of our wildlife
heritage.
