keep Allison
really busy
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
Before Allison Bain
started working
weekends this summer as'
a starter and timer for
the Goderich Sailing Club
races, she had only been,.
in a boat once and that ,,
was a motor boat.
• "I didn't know anything
about sailing before I
started this job but now I
do. It's not too hard of a
job. I can sun between
races. The club has been
really good to. me. Tlaly
gave me a free mem-
bership and I go to all
their barbecues," she
enthuses.
She has even started
taking sailing lessons.
As the • starter and
timer for the sailing
race;, Allison works
every, Sunday and

Mrs. Gordon Finlayson
returned home Friday
evening after spending a
week at the' University of
Guelph where she was
enrolled iri a course.
Dan Wylds celebrated
his 93rd birthday on July
19. Friends and relatives
called to wish him many
happy returns. He lives
with Mr. and Mrs.
Warren Wylds. Mr.
Wylds will be at the.
Ripley Craft Show July27_
and 28 where he will once
again be on registration.
Mrs. Duncan Farrish
was in- London 'on
Thursday where she
attended another shower
for her future daughter-'
in-law. The wedding is to
take place Aug. 3 in.
London.
Mrs. Oliver McCharles
was hostess on Tuesday
evening•-tothe Ripley and
District Executive
Horticultural. Society.
Plans were made for the
August Flower Show to be
held in the Township Hall
in Ripley ..Special plans
were made for a tea in
conjunction with this
show. -
The first Farrish picnic
was held on Sunday af-
ternoon at the home of
Mr. and Mrs. Bill
Farrish. All relatives of
the late kenneth and Mrs.
Farrish were invited.
sometimes on Saturdays.
She helps to organize the
races, holds up the
various flags at the end of
the north pier telling the
racers how much time
they have to get ready„
gives the official start
and times the racers with
a stop watch. When she
first started the job on
May 13, she couldn't tell
one boat from the other
but now she knows them
all.
Allison got her job
through the- Canada
Employment Centre for
Students in Goderich. It
took about three weeks
from the time she ap-
plied.
"Everyone told me
there were no jobs in
Goderich and not to even
bother applying but I
think there are rots of
jobs here. Manpower (the
Employment Centre)
must have liked me or
something because they
sure offered me a lot of
job's," says Allison.
Besides her weekend
sailing race job, Allison
recently. landed another
job through the Student
Employment Centre. She
is working during the
week in the laundry room
at Maitland Manor
Nursing Home. She folds
laundry and delivers it to
the various rooms.
Sometimes she has to
work weekends at
Maitland Manor but she
says she rushes around
and manages , to fit her
job there in with her
sailing race job.
Allison hasalso been
offered a • number of
gardening jobs through
the Student Employment
Centre but has had to turn
them down because she is
just too busy already.
•Allison, who is going
into Grade 12 at G.D.C.I.
next • year, wants to
eventually go into
medecine, biology •or
some other science. She
is still on probation at
Maitland Manor but is
hopeful that she- will be
able to keep the job part-
time in the fall after she
returns to school.
Allisonis proof that
there are jobs out there
for students with en-
thusiasm and willingness
to work and the Student
Employment Centre can
help.

John Brown's
deliveries
bring happiness
BY JOANNE
BUCHANAN
John Brown of
Goderich always thought
he knew his way arouna
town really well...until he
got a job delivering
flowers this summer and
discovered a few streets
he didn't know about.
John is working for
Denomme's Flower Shop
on the Square and has
been as far as Zurich
delivering flowers.
He had been' working
for his father at Brown's
Decor Centre for the last
two years installing
carpet and wanted
something different this
summer so he applied at
the Canada Employment
Centre for Students in
Goderich to see if
anything could be found
for him. He was quite
sure that something
would turn up and if not,
he could continue- his job
at Brown's Decor. It took
about two to three weeks
from the time he applied
at the Employment
Centre until the time he
got the job at Denom-
me's.
Lifting flowers is a lot
easier than lifting carpet,
says John,. and he is
really enjoying his job.
Besides delivering
flowers, he also does
some _cleaning up at the
shop. He works rill day
