Round 'n About
It's early. The sky is,
dull and it has rained
during the night.
I stood at the door, just
gazing about. Suddenly I
realized there were five
or six pairs of birds
practically at my feet. A
quick glance old me they
were pairs just quietly
having their breakfast.
A pair of bluejays who
are usually so noisy -
were moving the pine
needles around. I hadn't
realized they were so
large - and so. beautiful.
A pair , of mourning
doves.- larger than the
jays - were quietlgy
moving about too. They
were a very soft taupe or
mauve color. The larger
bird, the male I presume, '
sported a faint showing of
light --blue on and below -
his head. Their legs and
feet were, at times,
bright pink.
I heard a woodpecker
drilling somewhere.
Suddenly one landed on
the tree beside me - if my
arm had been two feet
longer I could have
touched him. What a
beauty - the brightest red
tuft on his head and his
"shepherds check" coat.
I was thrilled to be so
close to him. He hopped
around a bit eyeing the
branch, his mate was a
couple of yards away. He
seemed to be just waiting
for her to finish his
breakfast (like most
males he had probably
had his first!)
Even the sparrows
were colorful. These were
a pretty red -brown with
stripes running from
head to tail, very chipper.
Another pair of birds,
almost the size of the
bluejays but sharp and
skinny, were not mixing
with the rest but hopped
about the perimeter.
Very dark but not black - •
reminded one of our
blackbirds. Don't know
their name but there are
lots of them around.
Some small birds were
sparkling in and out of the
trees - so fast I couldn't
tell what they were.
While I'm taking all
this in, the dull sky has
disappeared and blue sky
and white clouds have
now taken over.
This is the time I like to
slip down to the . shore,
wander along the strip of.
wet sand, picking up
shells and shapes - in-
teresting things.
One time, I almost
stepped into a mass of - I
can't describe it - but I
had been warned about
jellyfish and so knew
enough to steer ciea-r of
any masses.
This is the time of day

'Did you ever think
about making your own
"good for you" granola?
Supermarket granolas
feature mostly rolled
oats, with various fruits,
nuts, seeds and
flavorings which are, too
often, over sugared and
over priced.
Make your own
granolas containing four
grams of protein per one
ounce serving, plus one
half cup of mirk.

A column
BY CATH WOODEN
At a very early age, probably
before I was born, some fun -
loving, type put a blindfold on
me, spun me around and let go.
I've been dizzy ever since.
I get lost everywhere I go. I
get lost in parking lots, in
schools, hospitals, and theatres.
I get lost in Goderich, in fog, and
in parks. I get mixed up looking
for the washroom in
restaurants.
My earliest memories of
misplacing myself are in the
same London department store.
Mother, knowing my tendency,
always told me to meet her by
the umbrella display if I
screwed up.
That was teriffic comfort.
How does a lost person manage
to locate an umbrella display? I
simplyscreamed at the top of
my four-year-old lungs.
Effective results then, but
people frown on that sort of
behavior in 20 -year-olds. They
don't let me shop there
anymore.
On city streets' I am a basket
case. There is not a bone in my
body with any sense of direction.
Some cohorts and I recently
attended a rock concert . in
London. When it was over, we
decided to indulge in some
hamburger munching and root
beer slurping. We all knew we
had to travel west to the
restaurant, even me.
I was allowed to naviagate.
Mistake. As we sat parked
beneath a sign with arrows
pointing north and south, I
confidently instructed the driver
to turn in an easterly direction,
claiming that after all I should
know because I lived here for
ten months.
They don't let me navigate
anymore.
Whcn'I went away to school. in
the rather large metropolis of
Toronto, I figured I couldn't
remain quivering under my bed
forever. Throwing caution to
the wind, I decided to risk public
transit.
A.friend gave me directions to
her home. I was to climb aboard
a bus which would take me to the
subway station. From there I
had to travel east four stops,
disembark, and take a certain
bus to a certain corner where I
was to transfer to a streetcar
which would deposit me a block
from said friend's door.
Think I could do it? I did it,
but I ended up in Buffalo.

One of the wonder ul
things Rotary ,club s
doing 'this year is spo -
soring International
Exchange Students with
Brazil and Australia.
Ydung Mike Grace will
be going to Brazil,
leaving early August. I
don't know too much
about Mike's plans, but
Janet Gardner, daughter
of Bill and Marg Gardner
of Eldon Street is thrilled
to pieces about her up-
coming trip - about
August 24 - to Townsville,
Queensland, Australia.
She will spend 11 months
there, staying with a
Rotary family. She will
go to school there a!nd I'm
sure she -will see a lot of a
very different country
than Canada.
Right now it is winter
..down under and I un-
derstand that when
summer comes, it is
VERY "hot. They have to
travel south to vacation
in a cooler part of the
country.
Janet will be taking a
slide program of Port of
Goderich, Ontario and
other parts of Canada.
We; will be happy for
these young people and
hope they have no bad
moments for their whole
trip.
Lucia - an International
Exchange Student from
Brazil - has been staying
with the Dan Murphy
family. She has just
returned to Goderich
after a trip to the West
Coast. I think we will
hear more about Lucia's
trip soon.
I think it_ is good that
our grandstand is named
as a Rot► Feagan
Memorial Centre. The
young people in the 30 -
age -group -our workers off
today and tomorrow -
will remember Ron very
web and will probably
hope to have the "get up
and go" attitude that Ron
was known to have in his
busy young life.
Don't forget . the
Mystery. Tours each
Saturday afternoon
leaving sharp at 2 p.m.
from the Livery Theatre,
35 South Street beside the
Bedford Hotel.
Check your Bulletin
Board and mark ' your
calendar.
Have you attended the
"Flea Market" Sundays
at the old jail?
Have a good day - be
thankful you can enjoy it.
