(Photo courtesy of the Blyth Festival for the Arts) McGillicuddy worth seeing BY JOANNE BUCHANAN McGillicuddy's Lost Weekend, the Blyth Summer Festival's 'third offering of the season, once again shows Keith Roulston's special insight into life in a small town. The play opened Tuesday night and will run until August 17. Roulston., a native of Lucknow and publisher of the Village Squire magazine, adapted the play from a regular feature entitled "McGillicuddy's 'Diary" which, appears in his, magazine. Ezekial McGillicuddy, portrayed by Layne Coleman, is a police chief in Hamhocks, Ontario beset with problems from •la tight-fisted town Council, high-pressuring rich citizens, juvenile delinquents and ec- centrics. After nine years of papery work, directing traffic at fall fairs, rescuing cats from trees, breaking up brawls at the local bar and writing endless parking tickets, McGillicuddy finally gets an exciting case to work on -when the- banker's son is kidnapped. The kidnapping in- cident spoils McGillicuddy's long awaited weekend holiday but provides the nucleus around which plenty of hilarity unfolds. Coleman is a good McGillicuddy with the exception that his voice is son1etimes projected too loudly in 'the Blyth Memorial Hall. Anne Anglin is also. She puts the pressure on •Mayor Lumpy (Peter Elliott) who in turn puts the pressure on McGillicuddy to give up his• .long weekend and find the Moneybanks' kidnapped teenager. Peter Elliott plays his role as a harrassed but unreasonable mayor to perfection. Angei Gei is a depen- dable actress. You can -always—count on "her to play her role to the fullest, whether that role be as a nervous wife in Midnight or a besp.eckled self-righteous town councillor in McGillicuddy. As Town Councillor Sally Hample, Gei is excellent. She goes around trying to save a society which doesn't 'want to be saved, spouting off about morals, corruption and decency. Meanwhile her husband has run off with a waitress from the local bar and her young son -is running wild with a gang of juvenile delinquents. The real delight of this most recent play however is Mary Ann Coles as Cindy l Lou, McGillicuddy's next- door -neighbour. Cindy Lou is a thoroughly charming and bubbly woman whose morals may he somewhat questionable. She tries to use her feminine wiles on McGilliccudy but never has too much luck, The play ends rather abruptly but ap- propriately for a con- tinuing saga. . Janet Amos is to he congratulated on some fine directing for a play which received a stan- ding ovation from the, opening nigh t audience. The set` of the play, designed. by Tony Abrams, is versatile in its combination police office and home. Lighting by John C. Hughes is right on. Costumes are quite good, especially the loud outfits • (complete with dangling earrings) worn yCindy Lou: Anyone who lives in a small town or who has even spent some time in one, will appreciate the ,exaggered humor provided by McGillicuddy's Lost Weekend. It is funny, entertaining and well - worth seeing. .4:) YOUR LIM GIFTED AST CHANCE *IVU‘'‘'‘,This is the last r_°Ver 600 week you can get 4vmo Ih Recipes Plus a $10.95 gift for learning to lose weight. Ontario Hydro's board of directors • approved the purchasing plans July 17. The simulators will be replicas of the control rooms at Bruce and Darlington but instead of being attached to the actual reactors and turbines, they'll be wired to a computer system which simulates the generating' station. Faults may be programmed from an instructor's console to enable the student to respond to abnormal conditions. The simulators will be installed at the Bruce A and Darlington satellite training centres. "The training Receive The Goderich Signal -Star Every Week in the Mail For A Full Year... simulators are a very important part of the total nuclear training progam. But they do not substitute for the other forms . of classroom, laboratory and on-the-job training," Lorne McConnell, vice- president - Production and Transmission said. Mr. McConnell added that the Bruce simulator will be adaptable to both the Bruce A nuclear generating station and the Bruce B station. At present, Ontario Hydro has one nuclear training simulator which has been in service since 1976 at Pickering satellite training centre. - CAE Electronics Limited of Montreal built the Pickering A simulator and the firm will build the Bruce and Darlington simulators. The Bruce A simulator is expected to cost about $14 million and the Darlingtonsimulator about $16 million. Smile .Some folks' economic philosophy is middle-of- the-road.
