The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-07-19, Page 8PAGE 8 —GODERICH SIGNAL -STAR, THURSDAY, JULY 19, 1979 Even the best of plans can backfire and a plan by the staff of the Royal Bank did just that Friday af- ternoon. The staff planned to have the Royal Bank manager thrown in the•Circle City CB Club jail at the Festival of the Arts but the pian backfired and the entire staff ended 'up behind bars. The employees convinced their manager to join . with them in coaxing a fellow employee to the jail telling him the plan was to throw her in jail.. The real plan was to throw the manager in jail but that practical joke was improved on when everyone went behind bars. Here one of the girls shows a little reluctance about spending her ten minutes in the slammer but her effort was futile. (photo by Jeff Seddon) Oil recycled with hal, of Kitchener motorists Kitchener -Waterloo motorists concerned about energy shortages are leading the ,way by recylcling used motor oil., pouring it into Used -Oil. Wells set up in 1-3,service •statiois throughout the area. Ontario's Waste Management Advisory Board and Environment Canada, are co sponsoring the pilot resource recovery project in conjunction with the Retail Council of Canada and the Ontario Petroleum Association. "Together we have created a wishing -well motif for the used -oil depots, which I think is an eye-catching idea with an excellent chance of success," said Ontario Environment Minister Harry C. Parrott. "There's a potential for recovering six million gallons of oil presently discarded by motorists in Ontario alone." Federal Environment Minister John Fraser expressed his: hope that the program continue as a co-operative effort: "It is essential 'in this period of energy shortages that we recover our non- renewable resources. I would like to see this idea converted into significant•, energy savings for all Canadians in a national application of ' the project." The plan sets out to recycle used motor oil currently discarded on the ground or in garbage cans by self -oil -changers, and put it back to work again as a multi-purpose lubricant or as a fuel. Rather than wasting a valuable energy resource, the motorists stop at the nearest depot and pour the .liquid into a 45 gallon drum called a •'Used Oil Well," easily identified in most depots 'as an old-fashioned wishing well on wheels. Province -wide, about ten million gallons of motor oil or ap- proximately 32 percent of all motor oil consumed, is 'purchased by do -it-. yourselfers. Of this amount, approximately 63 percent or about six million gallons is potentially recoverable. The rest is lostin use. When the wells are fulr most of the oil is trans sported to a Breslau. refinery for cleaning and eventual use as a lubricant for trains, chain saws and industrial applications. The project will run on a trial basis for at least one year, with close tabs kept on quantities of Long-timeresident dies in Wingharn hospital After a lengthy illness, Walter Dexterpassed away in Wangham Hospital.
