watched the gullies grw
for several de9ades.
The purpose of the
study is not to_allow the

two etude"todraw any
conclusions or make
specific recom-
mendations, They are
merely assembling in-
formation about the
gullies tbuj engineers or
technologists can use to
plot solutions.,
But koowbng solutions
is only part of the
problem according to
Rob Keip, co,um.uudy
relations officer with the
MVCA. Keip points out
that solving the erosion
problems can sometimes
be more expensive than it
is worth.
Be points out that
stopping an eroding gully
may cost tens of
thousands of dollars and
the landowners that are'
payingthat bill have to
take a look at the
situation to see if a cot-
tage or crop field is worth
ot-tageorcropbebdiowordb
the expense.
One concern lan-
downers and the MVCA
have in common is ad-
ditional problems created
d'ditinoaiprobienosoreatod
by anxious landowners
taking Short term
remedial action. When
gullies come dangerously
close to •a cottage the
owner invariably dumps
garbage or fill over the
bank to try to olo(v the
erosion. Barring that a
hasty tile drainage job
will be done to divertthe
water to another area.
Both f those actions do
nothing but create more
problems. Loose fill does
nothing more t.han make
the bank more unstable
while improperly placed
gabions or draipo divert
the problem to anotbe,r
area. The result is that
where".One problem
existed there are now
two. . `
But despite some
landowners taking the
law int5 their own hands
many are our?.r and
willing to spend money to
fight erosion. What now
has to be done is deter- ,
mine .how much money
has to be spent and
where.

The shore of Lake Hurori north and south of Goderich
is pitted by 96 gullies like this one. Not all the gullies
are as large as this but the i of lnd that slides
into the gullies annually has sparked exhaustive
studies on erosion and what can be done to stop it.
Sorne of the gulties have been around a long time and
extend' inland more than a mile. Studies indicate
some of the larger gullies on the takeshore growat at a
rate of over 500feet a year. (photo by Jeff Seddon)
