A splendid evening was brought to a close and a school term ended. WOMEN'S -INSTITUTE The Tiger Dunlop Women's Institute June -.41• meeting ""was held in Colborne Township Hall, Thursday, June 28 at 8 p.m. The president, Mrs, R. Buchanan presided welcoming all present and the meeting opened with all joining in the opening exercises. The roll call "Name an export of Canada and to what country it is sent" was answered by the mem- bers with keen interest and the secretary, Mrs. Allan Stoll read the' minutes of the last meeting and of the Sunshine Sister Banquet, Business for the meeting was varied - our Institute was pleased to receive a cheque from the District for help rendered at the Plowing Match.; plans were made re picnic lunch for the C.N.I.B. picnic at Harbor Park, . Wednesday, July 18; members voiced interest in helping to send a child to camp through Family & Children Services in Huron County; Mrs. Dorothy Feagan reported on the Graduation Banquet •and several` other items of business were left over for further discussyon at the July meeting. Members were pleased to note that award "Community Service" donated by our Institute in memory of Mrs. Annie Lamb on Awards night at Colborne School was won by Barbara Clark. Mrs. Eric Reaburn Blyth play good By Jim Fitzgerald It's hard to believe that a small theatre out in the boon docks of the country in a mostly unheard of place called Blyth could upstage a slick city cousin like the Stratford Festival, but it's hap- pened again as the Blyth Summer Festival is once more playing out its role in a classical David ' versus Goliath story this year. The Blyth Festival opened its doors last Friday night fpr the fifth season with a new production calledThis Foreign Land and 'the. -play is so well done by the company,, that it is better than most of the million dollar productions over at Stratford. The play, which is really a series of sketches following three im- migrant families in Huron County from their departure from their home countries in the early 1950's to the present' time, is filled- by such powerful emotion in places., that many in the audience were moved to tears. But the raw emotion is also balanced with bouts of laughter, as the "foreigners" adjust to thenew land of •Canada, its customs and strange language. The production, created by Patricia Mahoney and the com- • pany, is based on in- terviews with actual people in the area, and although ,the actors did an excellent job of generalizing the characters, some local people will .recognize the personalities. The cast of ,,Foreign Land is solid all the way through, with . some stunning performance -s put ..on by all seven members of the cast, who portray a number of different roles throughout the .play, ranging from young children, to a nagging boarding . house woman. One incident marred the opening night when first-time actress Seana McKenna fell off the stage during a blackout at the end of act one, and had to be rushed to Clinton hospital where she received stitches to her head. The cast ably im- provised during the second act, but the Saturday night show had to " be, cancelled. Miss McKenna was expected to be back for tonight's (Thursday) per- formance. Although there is not a weak point in the entire c -a -sting, -e-urtstandin-g-- ,. performances areput on Anne Anglin, a former Passe' Muraille member •w'ho may be remembered for her roles in the original Farm Show that blossomed from Goderich Township; Layne Coleman, who plays a Dutch immigrant father with sympathetic credibility; and Sam Malkin whose frequent role switching is com- pletely -believable. The sparse set and the • costume design by Patsy Lang are fitting and pragmatic for the production, and director James Roy's only mistake, although a very minor one, is the all too frequent scene and prop changes, which tend to detract from the smooth flow of the play. Foreign Land is sure to be one of the big hits at Blyth this year, so theatre goers are urged to reserve their tickets, and if at all possible see the play during the early stages of its run, as audiences have a bad habit in this area .of waiting until the end of summer before they go to • see . any of the Blyth plays. Then hundreds of ... people can't get in because of the sold out houses, while many seats go empty in the first half of the season. The production con- tinues, interspersed with three other productions, until August 18. percent gave her report on the Officers' Conference held in Waterloo in May. She told of several interesting ideas put forth at the Conference and thanked the Institute for sending her as a delegate. Mrs. Ella Bogie introduced the guest speaker, Miss Jean Siertsema, Dairy Princess. Miss Siertsema in her pleasing manner advised us she is a graduate from the Wingharn Hospital as a Nursing Assistant and is at present working at the Manor Nyrsing Home in Seaforth and with her work duties and Dairy Princess duties has a very busy schedule which ,she really enjoys. She showed interesting slides. on the subject "Cheddar Cheese" which were well received and after which' Mrs. R. • Buchanan thanked her and Use The Card presented her with a gift. Mrs. Ella Bogie for her motto "We reap what we sow" read two very appropriate poems. Our July meeting will be Thursday, July 26 at 8 p.m. at which the 4-H leaders _-and -their 4-H members 'and mothers will be our guests. The meeting closed with the closing exercises and all enjoyed lunch served by the committee of Mrs. T. Hunter, Mrs. J. Horton, Mrs. G. Kaitting and Mrs. E. Reaburn. SOCIAL NOTES Congratulations are extended to Mr. Ross J, Brindley" Colborne, whose marriage to Miss Darlene Yule of Walkerton is announced for this Saturday, July 7. in the Baptist Church. Walkerton. Many from Colborne Township -attended' Auburn's 125th birthday over the weekend and" also celebrations in Kincardine. Because of the rain many activities planned had to be can- celled and in other in- stances were not as successful, but in spite of the weather, things planned have to go on and the support of the public was appreciated. • Quests- with, Mr. and Mrs. Terence Hunter last • week were Mrs. Hunter's cousins Mrs. Clara Bailey, Toronto and Mr. Russell Till, Greenbank. 1OOFF SALE!
