HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-06-28, Page 55Yi Knox United Church The United Church of Canada was formed when the congregations of Knox Presbyterian Church and the Methodist Church voted to join together in 1925. The' Reverend W.R. Alp continued on as minister in 1929, • The United Church bought maroon coloured choir gowns in 1951, while funds were raised for the purchase of a Wurlitzer electric organ, installed in 1953. Under the leadership of Reverend Robert Hiltz, an addition was added to the church Sunday school room providing four new classrooms and two washrooms. To replace the wood burning fur- nace, a forced air oil Iprning heating system was installed. The church shed which had served as a shelter for horses and vehicles, and later used as a skating rink, was demolished in 1964. A parking lot was made in its place. However, he is leaving at the end of July. and a new minister will take his place. PAGE 21 United Church Women have large group Th .Women's Missionary Society and the Women's Auxiliary joined together to form the United Church Women on January 1, 1962. Mrs. K. McDougall was the first president of the new organization. Mrs. Donald Haines is the Auburn UCW president this year. Secretary is Mrs. Tom Jardin and the treasurer is Mrs. Oliver Anderson. There. are two units within the UCW, boasting about 60 members altogether. The leaders of the two units are Mrs. Jack Armstrong and Mrs. Morris Bean. The ladies keep busy with various activities. They take turns catering for the Lions Club. They clean the church, as well as support its upkeep financially. Quilts are always kept on hand in case of emergency such as fire. The ladies also visit the sick and needy. Their main project is accumulating a yearly bale. This year, the UCW sent 40 boxes to Ban- dladesh, Vietnam, Greece and Goodwill in London. The boxes consisted of used clothing, baby layettes, afghans and quilts. The layettes, afghans and quilts were All made by the members of the Unitad Church Women.
