Now and Then
Bill has many hobbies ••
from page 1:3
garden and grow's just
about everythingin it. He
works it every day if the
weather permits. He also
does a booming rasp-
berry business. Twenty
or 25 boxes a day are
picked by regular
customers. Bill cans his
own berries every year in
a style that every
raspberry lover is en-
vious of. Last year, he
canned 30 jars for himself
and they are all gone.
When he isn't ga,r,-
dening, Bill might be
found in his basement
woodshop. He does
custom work repairing
antique furniture, and
still turns out the oc-
casional baseball bat. He
built a beautiful pine
blanket box for his
grandso.i, Terry Worsell,
out of pine shelves from
Worseli'S old hardware
stor-.
Bill is also a big card
player. He played '500'
with his friends in the
library all winter. He also
plays community euchre
in the hall every week.
For one of their con-
tributions to the 125th
Birthday celebrations the
Craigs invited all the
members of Bill's 1953-54
champion ball teams for
a reunion.
Bill is enthused about
the celebrations and
notes that §pirit is one
thing Auburn never
lacked. "If you weren't
fighting, you were going
'to church," he laughs.
He remembers the war
days when Auburn held
Victory Programs.
Hullett and Colborne
would present half of, a
show and East and West
Wawano§h would put on
the other half. Judges
would decide the winner.
There was to be a
Scottish dance for one
show, and Bill and his
buddies found they were
one short. They got Irish-
man Jordie Hamilton to
help out. Jordie "got all
tanked up" before the
show and insisted on
putting his kilt over his
long underwear.
He rolled up the
longjohns and proceeded
on stage. Naturally, the
underwear fell down
halfway through yhe
dance.
As long as there are
folks like Bill Craig in
Auburn, with those kinds
of stories to tell, and a
lively past, Auburn will
never lose that fine spirit.
