Foodadditives
under study
The recent publication
by Pollution Probe of
Additive Alert (A Guide
to Food Additives for the
Canadian Consumer) is
theenvironmental
organization's first major
project dealing with
"food pollution".
"Historically, Probe
has looked to the air we
breathe and the water we
drink as the main routes
for human exposure to
contaminants in the
environment," says
Linda Pim, Probe
researcher and author of
Additive Alert. "But now
we are looking more and
more to chemicals added
to our food and the
problems that some of
them may cause."
Additive Alert
examines the reasons
why there are so many
additives in food;
describes the• different
types of additives (colors,
flavors, preservatives,
texturizers, etc.); lists all
additives allowed in
Canada; isolates those
which are suspected of
having short and long-
term health effects;
unravels the 'tangle of
regulations- ,governing
food additive use;. and
suggests action that the
consumer can take to
improve food safety.
"The most important
conclusions of Probe's
additive research are,
first, that not all of the
additives in ourfood are
harmful, but, second,
that not all of them are
necessary," says Pim.
Additive Alert is a
Doubleday Canada Ltd.
publication. It is 116
pages and sells for $2.95.

Beware buyers
Consumers should
beware of fly-by-night
home improvement

mercial Relations has
warned.
.Frank Drea says the
consumer services of-
fices receive many
complaints about
driveway pavers, pool
installers, renovators,
roofers and other home
improvement businesses
every spring.
"Most of the people in
this business are honest
and competent," says
Drea, "but there are a
few bad apples who do
poor jobs or don't finish
what they start and
disappear before the
consumer can do
anything about it."
The ministry of Con-

services to assist con-
