at St. Mary's Separate School at the Grade 8
graduation exercises on Monday. Left to right, are
Mary Margaret Murphy who advanced to the Zone
level in the Legion Public Speaking Contest, Paul
Murphy who placed first in the county for the in-
termediate boys In the OACTA Public Speaking,
Katharine Murphy who placed second in the county
for the junior girls in the OACTA Public Speaking,
and Mary Michele Morrissey who placed second at
the Zone level in the Legion Public Speaking

MRS. HAZEL EDNA
McWHINNEY
Mrs. Hazel Edna
McWhinney, formerly of
Ashfield Township, died
suddenly at her
daughter's home in West
Wawanosh Township on
Monday, June 18 at the
age of 83.
She was born in
Wingham on April 27,
1896 to William and Eliza
(Johnston) Carr.
She was married to D.
Lloyd McWhinney who
predeceased her on
February 20, 1970.
She was a member of
Lucknow Presbyterian
Church.
Besides her husband,
she was predeceased by
one sister, Mrs. Carman
(Irene) Hayden.
She is survived by five
children, Mrs'. Glen
(Norma) Robinson of
Parksville, B.C., Mrs
Albert (Lois) Nevill of
Vienna, Mrs. Gordon
(Irene) Sproul of West
Wawanosh Township,
Harold of Ashfield
Township and William
also of Ashfield Town-
ship; one sister, Miss Iva
Carr of West Wawanosh
Township; two brothers,
Harry and Edgar Carr,
both of West Wawanosh
Township; ten grand-
children and seven great-
grandchildren. -
A funeral service was
held at McCallum
Funeral Home in
Goderich on Wednesday,
June 20 at 2 p.m. The
Reverend William
Munshaw officiated.
Interment was in
Dungannon Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Jack
Pentland, Ross Henry,
Howard Johnston, Hugh
McWhinney, Carman
Pollock and Elmer Black.
Flower bearers were
Allan McWhinney, Larry
Pollock and Ralph
Matthews.
MRS. CLARA
MALLOUGH
Mrs. Clara Mallough of
Goderich died in
Alexandra Marine and
Genet -al Hospital on
Tuesday, June 19 at the
age of 71.
She was born in Clinton
on October 1.9; -1907 to
David and Susannah
(Ginn) Steep.
She was married to
Alex J. Mallough who
predeceased her on
October 22, 1975.
She was a member of
Knox Presbyterian
Church in Goderich.
She is survived by eight
children, Mrs. Jack
(Norene) Tebbutt of R.R.
2 Clinton, Mrs. George
(Joyce) Bolton of
Goderich, David (Sonny)
of Goderich, Mrs. Joan
Willows of Windsor, Mrs.
George (Deanna) Bacon
of Goderich Township,
season opens on Friday
The stories of new
Canadians will open the
season of the Blyth
Summer Festival on June
29.
"This Foreign Land",
which deals with the
experiences of recent
immigrants to this area,
opens Friday complete
with gala opening
festivities.
The evening's
festivities begin at 6 p.m.
when the ever -popular
turkey supper will be
served in the basement of
Blyth Memorial Hall by
the ladies of the corn-
munity;
After the supper, the
Brussels Legion Pipe
Band will entertain on the
lawn of the hall until
curtain time.
Following the play, the
audience is encouraged to
mix with the actors and

June 29 marks the
opening of the fifth an-
niversary season of the
Blyth Summer'Festival.
In five years, the Festival
has grown from a 'season
OT two plays and 14
performances to a season
of five plays, 61 per-
formances and a winter
series.
Audiences have con-
tinued to grow steadily,
confirming the Festival's
belief that there is a need
for original Canadian
drama in southwestern
Ontario. Thanks to the
residents of the Blyth
area for making success
possible.
The fifth anniversary
season promises to be one
of the most exciting ever.
Tickets for all per-
formances, including
opening night, are going
rapidly. Patrons are
advised to make their
reservations im-
mediately , to avoid
disappointment.

Old age pensions up
Increases in the Old
Age Security pension,
Guaranteed Income
Supplement and Spouse's
Allowance, effective in
July 1979, were an-
nounced recently by
Health and Welfare
Minister David Crombie.
The basic Old Age
Security pension will rise
to $174.82 from the
present $170.39.
The maximum
Guaranteed Income
Supplement for a single
person, or a married
person whose spouse is
nota pensioner and
receiving a Spouse's
Allowance, will increase
to $143.53 from its current
$139.89. Added to the
basic pension, this gives a
person receiving both the
OAS and the maximum
GIS a monthly total of
$318.35.
The maximum
Guaranteed Income
Supplement for a
married couple, both
pensioners, will increase
to $119.34 each from
$116,32. Added to the
basic pension this will
give each married
pensioner receiving the
maximum GIS a total of
$294.16, or $588.32 for the
couple.
The Guaranteed
Income Supplement is
paid to pensioners whose
income, apart from the
Old Age Security pension,
is limited. The amount of
the supplement varies in
