.LIQ -other
recreational activities.
Obstacle courses, for
instance, using basic
moves such as somer-
saults, rolls, crawling, a
ball toss, are an en-
joyable activity for some
off the mentally han-
dicapped.
"Creativity is im-
portant." Bernadette
said. "We have to keep
the people interested and
we have to find ways to
get them to do things that
they don't want to."
Forcing people to do
strenuous exercise is not
the prime objective of the
program.
Laura explailied, "We
work on their weak areas
and try to develop it. With
cerebral palsy• patients
we try to teach them to
swim."
Bernadette added,"We
try to give them the skills
so they can be integrated
into community
programs."
One group of mentally
handicapped people from
Exeter, for instance, are
allowed to join in with the
public swimming class at
night.
The program does not
end there. When not
teaching, the girls are
planning new progams
and finding ways to reach
more people.
A Fun and Fitness
program will begin on
July 1, when the girls will
visit nursing homes in the
county and work with
people who are unable to
leave the home.
As well, several
proposed progams are in
the planning stages. A
back ,prevention session
has been discussed to
ease pain and mobilize
the muscles and bones in
those who have back
ailments. A maintenance
program may be started
for those who need to put
injured limbs, such as
broken arms and legs,'
back into working shape.
An additional program
for stroke patients is
being planned
specifically for those who
are not presently in-
volved in another
program, like the Stroke
Club, operating out of
Huronview.
"Unfortunately we
don't have a comfortable
spot for people to visit at
the centre but" someday
we'd like to be able to
have a group come in for
a day to make their own
lunch and have a°visit,"
she said.
°
'The social aspect is
stressed in the program.
On Monday night, the
mentally handicapped
from group homes in
Exeter, Goderich and
Wingham joined for a
night of swimming and a
dance.
.All seems to be going
well at the Recreation
For Special Needs
project, but one large
obstacle stands in the
way of any long run
development. Being a
Canada Works project,
financed by the gover-
nment, the grant funding
will run out in September,
leaving the project with
no operating money.
Without this, eight
months of planning and
work could be finished.
Bernadette is con-
cerned about this possible
bleak future, but hopes
that the program can
continue.
"We hope to find funds
to continue this," she
said.
"I think there's enough
groups involved in the
program who think it's
worthwhile. So maybe
they can help."
