Although some part of their bodies may be injured, or may not be fully developed, they, like anyone else, need and enjoy recreational and social activities. It is for this reason that three young women, set up a unique program, Recreation For Special Needs. The program, which began in February, is financed through a Canada Works Grant. The trio conduct their fitness and aquatics' classes at the Vanastra Rec Centre. Despite a slow start, project co-ordinator Bernadette Scott reported that now some 147 people come each week to take part in the program. "We were glad it started slowly because we had to learn about it all ourselves," Ber- nadette explained. "The groups usually start out small, but then they go back to their homes and talk `about it and usually get more after that," she added. Small groups, like the six senior citizens from the Kilbarchen Nursing Home in Seaforth that just came for their first day are not discouraging to Bernadette. In fact smaller groups, first trying out the water are better since most need individual assistance. "If they came in masses it would be scary," she envisioned. The people come in all shapes and sizes, from children to adults. They come from various municipalities in the county and include groups with varying handicaps from crippled children, cerebral palsy victims to those af- flicated with arthritis and strokes. Each -group that comes to the centre stays for a minimum of an hour -and - a -half and up to an entire morning. During that time they are taught swimming in the indoor pool, exercising in the water and also exercising and other recreational activities in the fitness room. • While Bernadette,, a recreation graduate from Waterloo University, oversees the program, Susan Dick, a qualified Red Cross and Royal Lifesaving Instructor, is in charge of the water activities; and Laura Johns, a kinesiology graduate from, Waterloo University is in charge of the recreation program. While each has her specific duties, all .help when a group comes in. "Physically han- dicapped people are the hardest to work with, that's why we like extra hel'pers, especially in the water. Sometimes .it takes several volunteers to help them get in and Out of the pool," Ber- nadette explained. • While some are hesitant about going into the water, others have problems negotiating the ladder once into the pool. However, Bernadette is proud to say that there has never been any sort of an accident. If someone is par- ticularly reluctant to go in the water, Laura will take them to the fitness room for a little extra exercise. Much emphasis is placed on the pool. "The pool is our drawing card since it's 'the only indoor one in the county," Bernadette explained. Along with the pool, equipment in the fitness room is used regularly Turn to page 9A • Prices effective thru Saturday, June 30th, 1979 .Sorrento of tFeaturehe We reserve the right to limit quantities to normal family requirements! 1'/2 -qt SAUCEPAN Cookware Week with cover only .8.99 r,,,_,..„. ,, 1.00 .___ ,,,, tOSM Chatc0a't' !1lCharcoal KIN ORD BRIQUETS 1O -Ib bag [ur Regular Price 2.49 No, otherA purchase= required Get ready for Dominion Day with - :f=ls that go with holiday eating SAVE 2.57 Ginger Ale, Wink, C -Plus CANADA DRY BEVERAGES Case of 24, 10 fl -oz tins J l .YOU'LL DO better WITH A&P's barbecue favourites White Label HAMBURG BUNS OR 99 Our Regular Price 6.56 I pkg of 12 WIENER ROLLS Marvel Brand, Sliced SANDWICH.
