Four university students work to improve Square BY CATH WOODEN The town of Goderich is continuing its Business Improvement Plan this summer. Four students have been hired through the government's Experience '79 program to do a detailed analysis of the Square and its radial streets in the form of–maps, and to prepare recommendations for its continued improvement. The students, Jan Ginn, Brian Melick, Larry Crawford, and Dave, Cartwright started work on June 18, and will continue for 12 weeks. Architect Nick Hill, their administrator, called the group an "excellent team." Hill said the study includes the area of the Square bounded by Nelson, Waterloo, Vic- toria, and Elgin Streets. The students are map- ping road allowances, property bounderies, buildings, roads, curbs, sidewalks, parking facilities, signs, and greenery. Hill says the purpose of these maps will be to plan the next step of im- provements. "We're not only looking at the aesthetics, but also at the functional com- ponents," he said. "The Business Improvement Association wants to ensure that the core area remains a strong, vital, commerical area." He said that the students will ' make recommendations for landscaping and treescaping, and also for parking, drainage, and curbs. They have completed the field study for one quarter of the area and are currently drawing up the maps. One student expressed concern that the public doesn't un- derstand what they are doing. "One man wouldn't let us on his property so that we could measure his lawn," he said. Dave Cartwright, Larry Crawford, Jan Ginn, and Brian Melick measure a sidewalk on Kingston Street as part of this summer's Business Improvement Plan. The four students from Goderich and area were hired by the town under the government's Experience '79 program, which pays their wages. Contrary to an old wvive's tale, it was noted that breastfeeding affords a form. of natural child spacing for many families. Following the discussion Mrs. B. The mothers then had time to peruse the library and socialize. The topic of discussion was, "The Benefits of Breastfeeding to Mother and Child." Many mothers, mothers - to -be and babies were welcomed by Mrs. P. Bisback, the leader for the series. The enthusiasm of the mothers concerning breastfeeding was evident, as they listed all the benefits they could think of, such as being inexpensive, saving on time spent in the kitchen, having a happy baby, taking time to enjoy the children, building a closeness with family and a ready source of comfort during sickness or teething. Everyone was especially interested in saving money and saw that nursing meant no unnecessary purchase of infant foods, later in- troduction of solids, and only an additional snack for mother of 900 calories - such as peanut butter sandwich and a glass of milk. It makes it possible for many mothers still to lose weight over the few months' Mothers learned that breastfeeding is good insurance. Many babies are so healthy because human milk is naturally suited to their digestive system, as well as providing many im- munities against colds, infections and allergies. .The cholostrum which the baby receives for the first while contains '30 ingredients of goodness to nourish and sustain growth:.
