Joanne
and office
Joanne Doherty's "office" is a little gray shed
located between two stockpiles of gravel on
Bayfield Road. Joanne is working as a checker this
summer on the project to widen highway 21. The
days are long but Joanne says she is thoroughly
enjoying the job. (Photo by Joanne Buchanan)

specific dimensions.
Joanne says she is
gaining a lot of
knowledge on the con-
struction job that will
help her with her thesis.
"I'm picking up this
and that just by being
there. It's almost like
osmosis. Also I can relate
now to things that were
taught to me and it makes
the learning process
easier," she says.
Joanne's interior
decorating course is a co-
operative course which
means part of it consists
of on-the-job training.
When she graduates in
August, she will have her
dimploma of applied arts
and hopes to_ then join a
design firm or a retail .
store with designer
services. She also hopes
to travel to big centres
like New York, partly
because they are more
design oriented and
partly because she loves
to travel.
Joanne says her course
at Fanshawe is a good
a one and also a lot of ftin
but after many months of
sitting at a drafting table,.
she welcomes the change
of pace provided by her
outdoor construction job.
She says the job pays well
and will give her some
extra spending money for
her next term at school,
something most students
often don't have much of.
ANOTHER ANGLE
Of course there is
another angle to Joanne's
story --that of a female
working at what has been
traditionally considered a
male job. One motorist
has already stopped to to
tell her that it is nice to
see a female on a con-
struction crew for .a
change. Many other
motorists have stopped to
ask, • "What exactly do
you do?" •
Most motorists though
just seem to accept the
fact that she is working
with the construction
crew and simply want to
know when the job willbe
finished.
For a job as a checker,
it doesn't make toomuch
difference , whether
you're. a manor- woman,
says Joanne.
. "About the heaviest
thing I have to lift is a
pencil," she explains.
In fact,' the only
problem she has en-
countered so far" is fin-
ding a pair of work boots
small enough for her feet.
"They just don't design
work boots for women,"
she laughs.
And contrary .to the
image of gruff and tough
truck drivers and con-
struction workers,
Joanne says the ones on
her job are -super to '
work with..really nice
people." •
At first, both sides
(male And female) were
just a little bit un-
comfortable, she admits.
But so ° far there have •
been no problems at all,.
"I'm treated just the,
same as everyone else,"
she says. •
Incidentally, more
women are being seen
working around town at
traditionallymalejobs
these days. Chris Wildgen
is working • for the PUC
and one of the members
of a demolition crew
which is tearing down
some buildings on West
Street, is a woman. There
are two other women at
Joanne's job site too. One
is a flag person, working
for C.A. McDowell,
general contractor and
the.. other is Joanne's
cousin, Laurie Doherty
who started a week ago
as a weigh person for
Burns Ross. •
Joanne describes her
job in construction as
"sort of a family affair".
Her father and brother
are both in construction
and besides .Laurie, she
has another cousin
-working in construction
this summer too.
"Everyone got where
they are on their own
merits (hough," she
points out.
Asked if she would
work on a construction
job ,again, Joanne en-
thusiastically replies yes.
After all, she explains,
her future career plans
will involve herin some
types of construction
work `anyway.

stain for fences, picnic tables etc.
Solid state. Controls up to 600
watts of incandescent light from
bright to a romantic glow.
VENTILATES UP TO 1,586 SQUARE FEET OF
ATTIC AREA!
Lowers your air conditioning energy costs by as much as 39%
During summer, your attic can be filled
with super heated air in excess of 150° F.
A power roof vent can get rid of this
heated air and make your home cooler
and much more comfortable During the
winter, because we tend to over humidify
our homes, warm air seeps into the attic,
condenses and then freezes. On the first
warm day, this frozen moisture metts and
soaks the insulation in the attic. Result?
The wet insulation is compressed and you
lose the insulation protection you paid for
Summer and winter. a power roof vent by
