Goderich crew third in race
BY D: R. BUNDY
Although heavy seas
and cold, gusting winds
forced cancellation -of the
Goderich Sailing Club's
Sunday races, one of our
club's members braved
these conditions to sail in
the 100 mile Lake Huron
Yachting Association
race over the weekend.
Ken Dawson, in his 22
foot ' "Satin Doll" took
along two crew members,
Al Leggatt and Bob
Arbuckle, and sailed off
to Grand Bend last
Friday evening. They
were among 56 boats,
ranging in size from 22
feet to 40 feet, that were
registered to start in the
Grand Bend to Port
Sanilac, Michigan, to
Goderich to Grand Bend
100 mile,race,
Over 20 boats dropped
out following the
Saturday morning start,
due to the miserable
conditions, but our
stalwart sailors held on,
and finished the entire
course, ending up with a
third place finish in the
MORC class!
Congratulations,
guys...We bet you had
trouble adjusting to the
"no heel" conditions of
your own home when you
returned!
The race was one of the
fastest ever recorded in
the ten year history of the
race, with the fastest
boat, Sandpiper, finishing
in, slightly more than 14
hours!
After finishing the race
early Sunday morning,
Ken and his crew at-
tempted to bring the boat
back to Goderich against
those very heavy north
winds, but . after more
than five and a half
hours, had managed to
get only as far as
Bayfield, so had to
arrange for tran-
sportation back home
from there.
The Goderich Sailing
Club summer series of
races starts this Saturday
with the opening match
slated to start at 1:30
p.m. This will be followed
by a bring -your -own
barbecue Saturday
evening. ,
On Sunday, following a
10 a.m. race, the
Goderich power squadron
will be holding its annual.
"Sail Past" to com-
memorate our nation's
holiday. Get your boat
decorated up and join in
lunch and coffee to follow
at Snug Harbour.
One of our race
markers has gone
astray! If you hear of
anyone coming across a
14 inch diameter plastic
pipe, about six feet long,
filled with. foam, that
might have drifted
ashore between Point
Clark and Bayfield,
please contact Paul
Parsons at 524-7793. A
reward is 'offered for its
recovery.
