Be a detective
BY CAROLINE CASS
Receiving mail when
you're eight is exciting,
but when your favourite
author sends you a
personal letter and
colourfully illustrated
original poster, then
you're absolutely ec-
static!
Stn/en Kellogg,
renowned author -
illustrator of over two
dozen books won the
hearts of thirty-two grade
3 children at Victoria
School when he
responded with warmth,
sincerity, and en-
thusiasm to letters of
appreciation from the
class. It is this kind of
intimate experience with
books that firmly
establishes a child's love
and desire for quality
literature. Certainly, I
know a lot of little kids
who search out the name
'Kellogg' on book covers!
Steven Kellogg was
born• in Connecticut and
has loved to draw and to
tell stories since his pre-
school days. Mr. Kellogg
attended the Rhode
Island School of Design,
studied in Florence and
Washington, D.C. Now he
devotes all his time to
writing and illustrating at
his home in .Sandy Hook,
Connecticut where he
lives with his wife and six
children and pets.
The following list is a
brief sampling of Steven
Kellogg's delightful
books which everyone
will enjoy, especially for
their imaginative,
detailed illustrations.
Can I Keep Him? , a
1972 School Library
Journal Best Book of the
Year. Poor Arnold cannot
understand why his
mother will not let him
keep a lonely dog, a lost
kitten, a shy fawn and
many other creatures.
However, Mother seems
to have all the answers!
The • Mysterious Tad-
pole. Louis names his
new pet tadpole
Alphonse, but it is soon
clear this is not going to
grow into any ordinary
frog! (a 1977 ALA
Notable Book)
Once, Said Darlene, by
William Sleator with
pictures by S. Kellogg.
Once Darlene was in the
jungle. She said. Once
Darlene rode on a camel
in the desert. She said.
She told many stories the
other children did not
believe. Peter did not
know what to believe.
Maybe the magic did
really happen. Find out
yourself in this book.
The Mystery of the,
Magic Green Ball. When
Timmy loses his
favourite birthday ball in
the woods, he searches
without success. Albert
suggests to wait until the
leaves turn brown. Even
in the white snow of
winter, Albert- can't find
his ball. Be a detective
and help Albert!
