What'son your mind, friend
BY THE REVEREND
ARTHUR F. GARDNER
RETIRED UNITED
CHURCH MINISTER
Some time ago a man
whom I very seldom see
called at my home
Knowing there must be a
special reason for his
visit, I found myself
saying, after the usual
greetings, "Well, what's
on your mind?" Almost
unconsciously I was using
this popular, even a slang
expression.
Later I realized that I
used it frequently and so
began to ask myself what
was its significance. It
seems obvious that if one
has something on one's
mind it is a good thing to
get it off. Especially if the
matter is of such a nature
as to cause anxiety or
worry. The way this is
accomplished is worthy
of consideration. It
cannot be just thought
off, because that may the
more firmly entrench it.
Still there are ways by
which worry and concern
can be removed.
It may be "read off".
On one occasion while
waiting for a train I
observed the items for
sale at a news stand. The
clerk was not busy so I
asked him some
questions about the books
and magazines. He said
that detective stories,
Westerns and light fiction
are sold usually to men
with heavyrespon-
sibilities, men often well-
educated who have ad-
vanced far in their field.
The explanation, of
course, is that such men
need relaxation and
recreation provided by
light reading. This can be
overdone but within
limits it is logical and
valid:
For my own part, I find
that a book of travel or
biography, if not too
involved, provides the
change I need. •
A difficulty may be
"talked off". There is a
New Testament em-
phasis which has not been
sufficiently considered by
some branches of the
Protestant Church. Or if
it has been considered, it
has not been practiced.
This is the matter' of
sharing.
Three of the records of
the Gospel record the so-
called temptations of
Jesus. No doubt Jesus
had other temptations
and we can find some of
them if we read the
records carefully. -But
these. conflicts that
played so important a
part in the life of the
Galilean could not have
been known to the writers
of the New Testament
unless He Himself had
told of them. It appears
that Jesus took a few
friends into His complete
confidence. With them He
talked over his temp-
tations, h' h
victories, his prayers, his
hopes; his aspirations.
These were not too sacred
for him to share with his
intimate companions.
The situation with most
• of us is not that we do not
tell others of our suc-
cesses, but that we fail to
tell them of our defeats
and our anxieties and our
worries. The result is that
often they increase in
size. The more we think
about them the weightier
they become. Do you
have things on your mind
that ought to be talked
of`? The importance of
this approach cannot be
over -emphasized. We
ought never to do
anything that is far
reaching in its im-
plications
plications without talking
it over with someone else.
But there is still another
way.
The difficulty may be
"prayed off". Some
things may be:discarded
in no other way. They are'
of such a nature' that one
may feel that God only
should know about them.
inister's
study
Prayer is conversation
with God. I't should
always take the form of
speaking and listening.
God is never pre-
occupied. One never
m _ reeerves a busy—sign-at-
from his exchange. He is
always available. "More
things are wrought by
prayer than this world
dreams of."
I read recently a
statement of the effect of
prayer on men in the
medical profession. The
writer points out that the
doctor who takes time for
Family reunion
daily communion with
God is swifter in
diagnosis, surer and
steadier in operation,
more calm and decided in
judgement " and less
-wearied--by the work of
the day.
The great men of the
past have spent much
time in the presence of
God. It was said of John
Wesley that he was much
in the "upper room."
David Livingstone
walked courageously
through sickness and
danger in Africa because
la
regularly he betook
himself to the Lord in
prayer. It can be truly
said that men in every
walk of life pray it off.
In any consideration of
this great subject one
must necessarily turn to
Christ, who was gifted in
the art of conversing with.
God. True, Jesus prayed
constantly. Before eating
he sought his Father's
blessing. During temp-
tation he asked for divine
wisdom. Before a dif-
ficult task; he bowed for
strength and power. After
every victory, he prayed
for humility.
In the Garden of
Gethsemane he spoke
with great anguish of
spirit and agony of mind.
We believe Jesus was
able to endure the suf-
fering of the cross
because here he "prayed
it off"; because there as
his friends slept, he was
able to say to God, "Not
my will, but thine be
'done."
Is there something on
your mind?

Get ready for big week
As well as the regular
programs, Huronview
had a busy week
preparing for Senior
Citizens Week.
On Saturday morning,
16 choir members
practised. The choir has
been invited to sing at the
Tea Dance in` Day Care
the end of the month.
Mrs. Mary Haugh
donated more lovely
flowers to Huronview this
week due to the high wind
l
storm that damaged
some stems.
Tuesday afternoon
residents took advantage
of appointments in
Seaforth and the van was
filled with men from
Special Care who went
along for the ride. Mrs.
Edith Dale Baker had
called and invited
residents to view her new
lambs and the rest of the
flock, which they did on
the way back. The
residents enjoyed the
"Bottle Baby" and thank
Mrs. Baker for her kind
invitation.
On Wednesday af-
ternoon, Mrs. Bessie
Elliott, Mrs, Pat•
Thurlow, Mrs. E. Black,
Mrs. E. Lewis and Mrs.

Following this in-
