TIViict'Lcan really be a useful tool
For many people,
television can be more
than ent4ainment. TV
can be extremely useful,
according to Murray
Creed, producer of CBC's
Marketplace.
Mr. Creed is, leading a
•television production
workshop as part of
Summer Campus, a
vacation program at the
University of Guelph this
July.
Community groups
small businesses and
industries regularly use
newspapers, magazines
and radio to advertise or
convey information, but
find commercial
television prohibitively
expensive, he notes. By
gaining some expertise in
television production,
these groups could make
use of, the free air time
offered by- local cable
television, to promote
their causet.or product.
SuEh training is also.
useful in producing tailor-
made "in-house" video
programs to meet the
needs of a small company
or institution.
Exposure to production
equipment and
techniques can also
provide a valuable
overview of the subject
for people working in the
co nim un -i -cat -ions field.
Even the general
television viewer will
gain a new critical
awareness.
While the one-week
course can scarcely
produce experts, Mr.
Creed feels that par-
ticipants will gain a
working knowledge of
how to transfer an idea
into a program. Using the

the Arts has received a
grant for $500 from the
Carling Community Arts
Foundation to. help defray
the costs of the Centre's
second annual Fiddle and
Step dance Festival held
June.1 & 2 in the Blyth
Memorial Hall. The
Carling Community Arts

events of multi -cultural
significance. Ed
Paquette, regional
representative of the
Carling Foundation,
devered a cheque to Jan
D tton, . administrator of.
the Festival with wishes
for the continued success
of the Festival.
This year's fiddle
festival built on last
year's success by at-
tracting over one hun-
dred competitor's and
near capacity crowds for
both nights of com-
petition. Dancers and
fiddlers carte from as far
away as Sarnia„' Kit-
chener and London to
compete. Over $1,000 in

distributed to winners in
eight categories.
