The Goderich Signal-Star, 1979-06-21, Page 21Peter meets
Keith in Blyth
BY CATH WOODEN
Peter Colley decided to
write plays for the Blyth
Summer Festival
because of the
strawberries and ice
cream. Keith Batten is
living in a house without a
roof while directing "I'll
be Back for you Before
Midnight".
"Midnight" is the
second play Peter Colley
has written for the Blyth
stage. The first was
"Huron Tiger", a
historical play about
Tiger Dunlop.
"I'll be Back for you
Before Midnight" is a
comedy thriller about
back -to -earth types who
find more on their farm
than potatoes and weeds.
It will run throughout
July and stars Peter
Snell, Kate Trotter,
Angela Gei, and Peter
Elliot.
Keith Batten began
rehearsals on June 11.
The director is "very
impressed" with the
actors and feels there is
"good chemistry" among
them.
Batten came to direct
in Blyth because he liked
the local community
support and reaction he
saw there when he at-
te,rded- previous pla-y-s.
He went to York
University with •James
Roy, manager of the
Festival, and was invited
to direct. '
Batten spent five years
in Stratford assisting or
co -directing with Robin
Phillips. He also directed
three shows at Theatre
London, his latest being
Noel Coward's "Same
Tirpe Next Year".
Before beginning his
directing career, Batten
also acted in Stratford for
several years. To round
out his theatre talents, he
is presently writing a
play.
Peter Colley
discovered Blyth, not as a
playwright, but as an
actor a couple of years
ago. He was with a
touring company to do a
puppet show, "The Little
Prince", for area
children. He was the only
human' on stage. Colley
was immediately at-
tracted to Blyth and
"promised James Roy to
write a play if I could
have more strawberries
and ice cream."
The Canadian
playwright did "Huron
Tiger" and, then began:

Northwestern Ontario.
Originally it was to
examine pollution control
deadlines for the firm but
that issue has been
overshadowed by the
need to make certain a
pulp and paper company
survives in the area.
A Federal investigation
has been launched into
reports that fluoride
pollution on Cornwall
Island from the United
States aluminum smelter
has been killing cows,

this information is

RENT REVIEW •
Rent °review will
remain indefinitely in
Ontario, although
allowable rent increases
could go higher than the
existing six percent
under steps taken this
week by the committee
studying new Landlord
Tenant legislation.
The Cabinet has been
given the power to lower
or raise the six percent
limit on rent increases as
early as January 1, 1980.
AGGREGATE ACT
The Minister of Natural
Resources introduced the
Aggregate Act as a result
of the report that the
Ontario Mineral
Aggregate Working
Party has submitted to
the Minister in Decem-
ber, 1976.
The Working Party was
established to recom-
mend an effective and
broadly acceptable
mineral aggregate
resource management
policy for the Province of
Ontario.
Many of the features of
the report and of this bill
are the result of the ex-
perience gained bythe
various interests con-
cerned with the Pits and
Quarries Control Act,
1971.
The new Act has three
purposes: to provide for
the managment of the
aggregate and crown
aggregate resources of
Ontario; to control and
regulate Pits and
Quarries, wayside pits
a d quarries and crown
a gregate pits and
quarries; and to require
the rehabilitation of land
from which aggregate or
crown aggregate has
been excavated.
This Act is lengthy and
I am sure, that it will be
somewhat controversial
in some of its provisions.
It will not he `'passed
before the summer
break.

writing "Midnight" last
December. It went
through re=writes in
Toronto acting
workshops 'and he and
Batten find there are
very few problems with
the script.
Colley has been staying
at James Roy's home.
while in Blyth, "because
it's too cold at night to
stay on my boat." Batten
has been suffering the
cold, too, since the house
he's been staying at is
being renovated and the
roof seems to be missing.
Keith Batten, left, is directing "I'll be Back for you Before Midnight", which
opens July 3 at, the Blyth Summer Festival. Peter Colley, right, wrote the
play. (photo by Cath Wooden)

GLT to stage Fiddler on the Roof
BY
BRIAN AND BETH
MARKSON
Goderich Little Theatre
held its annual general
meeting on June 6 and its
wind-updinner on June
15.
A new executive was
elected and June Hill as
president announced the
proposed Theatre Bill for
the coming season. To.
open the season will be
"Fiddler on the Roof",
directed by Eleanor
Robinson. The second
play will be "Private
Lives" directed by June
Hill and the third play is
to be directed by Philip
McMillan who will an-
nounce his decision
shortly. It could be either
"The Miracle Worker" or
"Hay Fever".
Looks like an exciting
year. Be ready to . buy
your membership when
the tid'ket compaign
starts.
GLT is made up of
many people; the ones
who actively participate
on and around the stage
or members who give
support throughout the
years by buying tickets.
Everyone is a member
and it's nice once a year
to meet with all at a
dinner.
This year the dinner
was held at the Maitland
Country Club. Debbie
Dunlop, food and
beverages manager, did
GLT proud and her
helpers as well as being
delightful to talk to, were
a joy to behold.
George and Syble
Budge were at the dinner
from Toronto. Best
wishes for better health
are sent to George. It's
always nice to see them
both.
Reg Bell, newly -elected
treasurer,came along
with wife Enid and
daughter Sue.
Absent and missed was
honored life member and
past president, Frank
Bisset. Thoughts and
prayers are with him.
One of GLT's finest
actresses for a few years,
noted for her per-
formances in Yesterday
the Children were
Dancing, Lion in Winter,
Any Wednesday and Four
Poster, Virginia Lodge is
leaving Goderich for
London. Virginia was
presented with an
original Mona Mulhern
painting from GLT
members. Virginia will
be missed.
Mike Scott, the erstwile
"ugly sister" from
Cinderella has been
taking prizes with his
sketches. He is a man of,
many talents.
With the advent of
summer, GLT hopes you
will take time out to enjoy
live theatre richer here
than most parts of
Canada and the USA,
positioned as we are so
close to Stratford, Grand
Bend and Blyth. But
remember please, GLT
who bring live theatre to
you in the winter months,
needs your membership,
your enthusiasm input
and involvement,
