Up until the weather
made an abrupt change
around 4 p.m. on Sunday,
the week -end was ideal
for sailing out off
Goderich Harbour. The
hot hazy days have

exhilaration when they
fill the sails and make the
rigging whistle a tune!
The week -end of sailing
began for some on Friday
evening as a fleet of four

Did you know that our
modern word "caddy" is
derived from the french
word "cadet"? It seems
Mary Queen of Scots was
a devotee of the game and
played when she was in
France.' She employed
students, referred to as
"cadets", to carry her
clubs, hence our word
"caddy" ,for one who
arries our clubs. I'll try

afternoon, as tney battled
it out in the second race of
the spring series. The
winds were hot and
heavy, blowing a steady
25 knots from the south
for most of the race,
picking up to nearly 35 in
gusts later in the af-
ternoon. Mains were
reefed, working jibs set,
and all the crew were
hanging over the rail on
the beats to windward.
On the reaches, spin-
nakers flew with wild
abandon (some with
more abandon than
others, .much to the
chargrin of the helm-
sman!) and produced
speeds in excess , of 9
knots at times. There was
one nearly disasterous
collision at the jibe mark,
which left the "Satin

hanging from its safety
chain, and the two Lasers
