Trimaran
to adventure
BY CATH WOODEN
When one enters an
aircraft hangar, one
expects to find an air-
plane in it, or something
with wings anyway.
Not so at Goderich
Airport. In one par-
ticular hangar there, the
only things with wings
are the birds that flutter
around the rafters.
There's a trimaran in
there. A trimaran is a
three -hulled sailboat.
This one is called a
Brown Searunner and it's.
37 feet long and 22 feet
wide.,
Tom andwen Perry,
of Bennet Street in
Goderich, have been
building it for the past
two years. They work on
it when the weather is
warm enough and hope to
complete it next spring.
"There's three phases
to building a sailboat,"
says Torn. "The first is
the hulls, the second is
the super -structure and.
the decks, and the third is
the fittings and masts.
We're in the second
phase."
Their biggest
drawback so far has been
inflation.
"Costs have risen 100
percent since we started.
That's the biggest
problem," says Tom.
"Also the weather and
the'birds," adds his wife,
Gwen, who has an equal
share of work in the
project.
Cost was one of their
initial reasons for
deciding to build their•
own trimaran rather than
buying one ready-made.
A, new trimaran of that
size would cost in the
neighborhood of $42,000 to
$45,000.
The Perrys expect
This three -hulled sailboat, called a trimaran, was designed by
Jim Brown, an American. Tom and Gwen Perry are building the
175th Brown Searunner and hope to complete it next spring.'
their's to cost them about
$25,000. "But ours won't
have all the fancy
navigational equipment
that some do."
When it's finished, the
sailboat certainly won't
be wanting of any
elegance. The outside
"can be any colour, as
long as it's white," Torp
laughs.
The inside will have six
and a half feet of head
room and all the comforts
of home. It will include a
sail locker, head and
shower, dressing room,
cockpit, navigational
center, galley, and
lounge. Double berths
will hang over the water
in closed off area in
between the hulls.
The sail outfit the
Perrys will use is called a
cutter rig. It will include
two forward sails, a
mainsail, and an extra
big spinnaker.
Tom and Gwen chose to
build a three -hulled
sailboat "because they
are more stable." It took
a long time to decide
what plans to use, but
they finally chose those of
Jim. Brown, an
American designer.
Brown has four designs
for trimarans ranging
from 31 to 40 feet long.
The Perrys chose his 37
foot Brown Searunner.
Theirs -is the 175th
Searunner to be built.
Tom Perry, originally
from Norfolk, England,
has been sailing all his
life. Gwen learned to sail
four years ago on Lake
Huron.
•"We've always had
. boats," she says. "When
we lived in Vancouver,
we got some unusually
cold weather. The water
froze in our cabin.

boat sank. We brought it

sold it."
Tom built two
sailboats, 16 foot
Fireballs, before he and
his wife undertook this
project. He gave one of
the boats to his son and
sold the other.
Retired from the
construction business in
Toronto, Tom likes living
in Goderich. Gwen is
food services ad-
mininstrator at the
Bluewater Center.
"We chose Goderich
because we wanted to get
away from the ratrace
and be on the lake."
The Parrys haven't
planned a specific trip
with the trimaran yet,
because it's hard to
foresee when it will be
finished exactly.
"If it's- cold we'll head
to the South Seas."
At --any rate, they'll
eventually be sailing the
oceans all over the world
at the mercy of the wind
and the waves.
Right now, though, the
elegant trimaran
remains at the mercy of
those darn birds.
Gwen and Tom Perry are going to name their 37 foot sailboat "Huron
Flight". Gwen, food services administrator at Bluewater Center, and Tom,
retired from the construction business, in Toronto, have been building their
boat at the Skyharbour Airport. (photo by Cath Wooden)
